RFI - Southampton area - August Bank Holiday w/e

I have a few days to spend in the area over August Bank Holiday weekend with my student daughter. Not done any birdwatching in this area before so keen to hear local's opinions on where to go. Heading down from Yorkshire early Saturday so will have Saturday pm, all day Sunday & Monday to...

    RFI - Brisbane (& beyond)

Hopefully my wife & I will be visiting Brisbane (initially) at Christmas 2023/New Year 2024 whilst our kids are studying there for a year. The plan is to spend 6 weeks over there. We have a fairly loose plan just now, with stays in Brisbane mainly, but potential excursions to GBR & a few days...

    RFI - Paphos (December)

My missus & I have just booked a 4 night stay in Paphos from 3rd December for a short winter break. I'll likely have a day or so for birding and, as I've never been, was 1) wondering what to expect in that area & 2) are there any guides/companies who could take me on a guided day out? Richard

    Gull - Finland

Just been going back over images I took at Wild Brown Bear Centre back in 2018 & came across this image of a gull - is it just an Lesser Black-backed or something else?

    Owl - Yorkshire

Have had conflicting IDs from 2 experienced birders on this one taken from a site I have rigged with a trail cam. Would appreciate any thoughts. Hopefully it plays OK, seems to be playing at fast speed when i watch it myself.

    Passerine - Ilkley Moor

Anybody like to have a go at an ID on the small passerine in this video clip? I have a camera trap set up to monitor Barn Owl on this site & I caught this small passerine on camera earlier in January, but it decided to be at the far end of the fence line :) . I've showed it to a friend & we...

    World's End Info

Hi all, I was wondering if there was any more up to date info on World's End (other than what comes up in a forum search)? I'm looking for up to date info about exactly where to park for viewing Black Grouse. I am aware of the sensitivity of the species & I have a date in April when I will be...

    Coastal Resorts - Gulf Coast

Rough plans being drawn up for a bit of a 3 week road trip family holiday next June/July. Includes the usual Orlando area (which I've done before) to satisfy the kids, and a few days in the Keys. One idea we did have was spending the last few days/week at a coastal resort for a bit of R&R...

    Bird of Prey, Kefalonia, Greece

Seen high above the mountains on the road back into Sami, Kefalonia. Probably just a Buzzard, but it did seem much bigger than the Buzzards I see here at home, and it's probably wishful thinking that it's an Eagle species :-) Thanks in advance, Richard

    Ilfracombe area

We've decided to book a last minute family cottage break for October half term week near Ilfracombe. Never having been to the area I would be grateful for any pointers as to suggestions where to visit. No specific targets in mind, but would be nice to visit new areas. Richard

    BOP - Kefalonia

This BOP was seen fairly regularly over the hillside in front of our apartments in Lourdas, Kefalonia. When I first saw I thought it looked a huge BOP & thought it was an eagle sp. Having looked closer at some of the (poor) photos I got of it I'm now thinking it may only be a Buzzard?? Looking...

    Dawn Chorus Meet 2015

I'm going to kick this one off as it appears the only Sunday between now & then end of May I would have free is Sunday 17th May. Are we up for another stupid o'clock meet at Strid Woods/Bolton Abbey? Richard

RFI: Carcassone Area - any guides available?

I will be attending a family wedding in the Carcassone area between 18 & 21 September (at the Chateau de Camon, which looks spectacular btw :eek!:), and it looks like I may have the 19th as a totally free day (& the only one). Are there any guides available in the area who would do a day's...

    RFI: Menorca

Going back to Menorca for a week in August on what is mainly a family holiday, but have the option of doing a day or so birding/photography. Haven't been back for a few years, so looking for anybody's recent experiences. Would love to photograph Bee-Eaters & saw quite a lot at La Vall last...

    Dragonfly IDs - Crete

Managed to snap these 2 dragonflies whilst on holiday in Crete recently. I think the redder one is a Scarlet Darter, but not sure about the other. Confirmation appreciated. Richard

    Corvid confirmation, Ilkey

I think I know what the attached (poor, distant record shots) pictures are of, but the location threw me. I think they are Ravens, and would be a brilliant local tick for me. These were spotted over Ilkley Moor, 10 miles from Leeds & Bradford & they sounded exactly like the Ravens we have just...

    Picture Style Question

At the moment I have Picture Style set to Neutral on my 7D but I was wondering if this is the best for bird/wildlife photography. My thought process was that I put my shots through PSE8 anyway but is there a better style or custom setting to be used? Thoughts appreciated!! Richard

    Pipit - Mull

I came across this Pipit one morning whilst walking the dog along the beach at Aros. To put the tree in context it actually grows on a rocky promentory on the beach. I have this down as a Rock Pipit as it did also spend a lot of time on the beach, but it also seems to be doing a really good...

    First Attempt with new gear

Not the greatest picture in the world, but I can definitely see the potential in my new 7D & 100-40 IS. The Robin was flitting from branch to branch & it was a freezing cold day so I couldn't get my hands out of my gloves quick enough to mess with different settings. Richard

    Where to go near London

My wife & I are having a weekend in London at the end of Feb (my Xmas present to her). As we now both have the Friday off she has suggested setting off for London that day but going to a reserve somewhere for a photography session. On the Saturday morning we would then be close enough to have a...

    450D & 100-400 combo??

Looks like I'll be in a postion to finally upgrade my lens from my Tokina to a Canon L glass in the next couple of weeks. I was thinking of a 100-400 (for IS) rather than a 400 prime to couple it with my 450D as I won't have the budget for a new body as well. I know this has probably been done...

    Kefalonia - 10 to 24 July

We decided this year to spend our family holiday in Kefalonia (actually I was ordered by my wife to find her some hot weather after last year’s “Summer” holiday in Skye). So, we found ourselves in the Apollonion Spa & Resort (http://www.apollonia-hotel.gr/) near Xi Beach from 10 to 24 July. This...

Couple more for confirmation - Kefalonia

Different day, different BoP, but in view of my earleir post I now think it's just another Common Buzzard. 2nd smaller bird(s) perched I think are just Corn Buntings but I wasn't sure. Thanks again, Richard
