I know this is a long shot, but I was told these feathers are from Peru. Any ideas?

White Tailed Eagles Poisoned in Northern Ireland

News out that two WTE, one of which was introduced into Ireland (south), Country Kerry in 2007, have been found poisoned in County Antrim (Northern Ireland). Apparently an insecticide banned for outdoor use was used, so it seems intentional.

    Cuckoos

I've never heard as many cuckoos calling as this year. And in places I haven't heard them before. Is this because a) there are more cuckoos, or b) the normal number of cuckoos are calling more? (I've discounted the possibility that it is one highly mobile cuckoo).

    Request for mushroom ID

I don't think this is native to Ireland. It grew in the potted soil of an indoor plant at home. There were about six of them. Not sure where the soil came from, I bought it at a garden centre, or maybe Lidl. There's nothing like it in my Fungi books. Any ideas?

    Kowa TS613 Primary ED

Hi, does anyone have an opinion on this scope? I'm thinking if making am offer on a used one. Unfortunately it has the 20-60 eyepiece rather than the 30x. I'm wondering if it's considered good optically, and if it can go on a lightweight tripod. (Obviously title should read 'Prominar', not...

Possible to attach filter to old APO 62?

Hi, I recently bought a 2nd hand APO 62 (I had one before, sold it, can't remember why). The scope is in excellent condition, but I've seen a few references to coating problems caused by salt spray. Looking at the objective end, I see i threads in the housing. Does anyone know if it is possible...

Help needed locating guide to pelagics of North Atlantic

Hi, years ago, on the advice of a BF member, I bought an excellent guide to seabirds of N. Atlantic. I've since lost it. I can't remember the title, but it was a small pocketable booklet, ring-bound, paperback, with line-drawings rather than photos or paintings. Excellent for quick identifaction...

Looking for help with remembering a word

Hi, as Cognitive Decline progresses, I find myself struggling to remember words. The latest is a noun to describe a book of natural history that studies one particular species, e.g. J.A. Baker's 'The Peregrine'. Words like signature, epigraph, etc. are circling in my head so it might be related...

    Juvenile Corvid, Maynooth, Ireland

My daughter lives in Maynooth and has been feeding this crow. Smaller than a rook but bigger than a jackdaw. Juvenile, doesn't interact with rooks much but has been begging jackdaws for food. She says the bird hasn't grown in the last week. I'm guessing it's fairly scrawny juvenile rook. Any ideas?

    Night migrating birds over Dublin

Sorry folks, no recording, but this last few nights I've heard calls over my house about 11pm. Duck-like double call, 'Wek-wek', at fairly long intervals. They sound fairly low altitude, and the birds are always approaching from the south and heading north. Maybe just local mallard?

    Do you dream about binoculars?

I think there was a thread about this some years back. I was reminded of it because lastnight I dreamt that a work colleague gave me his 6.5x42 Swarovski EL (non SV). I was a bit surprised as I didn't know Swaro had ever produced these. I also thought 'What the hell am I going to do with these?'.

    10x32 v 10x42 image size

I have IS 10x42 and 10x32. Tonight is a full moon, with clear skies here, and the moon rose at about 6pm. I took both binos out to look. Firstly and more obviously, the image through the 10x42 was noticeably brighter and sharper. This is not a criticism of the 10x32, which is no slouch. But the...

    Game bird call? Wicklow, Ireland

I couldn't see what was making this all, in rough moorland/gorse/heather with some sheep pasture. It was very repetitive. There was a raven in the trees, along with two hooded crows. But the call was continuous and didn't vary...no other Covid sounds. Any ideas? I have seen Red-Legged Partridge...

    Head for Velbon Sherpa 200

Hi, my son has this tripod that he uses for his camera to photograph the stars. The little plastic spring release thing that holds the foot plate onto the head snapped. I'm assuming this can't be replaced, but can anyone recommend a fairly cheap and cheerful replacement head for the tripod...

    Do foxes dig in gardens?

Hi, a colleague awoke on Monday to find there were holes dug all over her garden. The kind of thing a terrier looking for buried bones would make, according to her description. Up to twelve inches wide and four to five inches deep. We don't have moles (and I think they leave little mounds...

    House Martin's still feeding young?

Hi, HM have tried nesting building, unsuccessfully, for a number of years under the PVC gutter of our holiday flat in Kilkee, West Clare (Ireland). This year they've succeeded, and have been busy feeding all summer (at least since Phase Two Lockdown was eased and we could visit here again)...

    Advice on mid-size scopes?

Hi..I have to downsize to mid-size, trivial shoulder/back issues (a luxury in a world where most have real problems). A store in Dublin has a black Zeiss Victory 65mm w/15-56 ep, last one anywhere it seems, for 1850 euro. I know nothing about this scope and the sales people there know even less...

    PF 65 ED eyepieces?

Hi, I'm half-thinking of pulling the trigger on one of these, as I need a smaller, lighter, mid-size scope. I am a bit challenged technically and am confused about stuff like focal lengths etc. Can anyone tell me what mag the XW14 ep gives on the PF 65? I'd be happy with a fixed 27 or 30x, I...

8x20: 'New' Swaro 8x20B, Leica Ultravid, and 'Old' Swaro

I like the 8x20 format and have been through a few models. I have a question for others who may have greater knowledge than I. First, a few caveats: I realise there is sample variation. Also, one can´t really compare "from memory". And no two sets of eyes are the same. And no two eyeballs, even...

IS 60-R and 40931 ep question

I recently bought, secondhand and locally, the above combo. This is an experiment prior to possibly buying an MM4, to see if I can 'switch' to a smaller scope for general use. Firstly, I am very impressed with the IS 60R...it is marketed as a starter/budget scope, but it is no slouch, and...

    Fledged Song Thrush in trouble...advice?

Hi, local cats seem to have decimated a brood of Song Thrushes that fledged today from a neighbour´s hedge. I rescued the last one from a sticky situation. It seems in robust health, and was opening it´s beak to be fed when I rescued it. I´ve put it (delicately balanced) in a rowan tree outside...

    Bray Beach, Ireland, jellyfish-like creature

This creature was floating expired in the shallows at Bray Beach (near Dublin) today. Jellyfish-like, but no tentactles and a very solid, robust body. Any ideas as to what it is? I've never seen anything like it in these waters. (The second photo is of its underside.)

    San Sebastian, Gipuzkoa

A friend has sent me a Dawn Chorus recording from San Sebastian, and would like to know which bird is making the distinctive 'To wit! To wit!' Sound after about twenty seconds. Any help appreciated.

    Newbie question about Sony HX400

I know absolutely nothing about photography, but my son has taken a big interest and recommends I get the Sony HX400 because it has a 50x optical zoom. Do any BF photographers use it for birding?
