    Yorkshire Birding

Black Throated Thrush showing well this morning at RSPB Adwick Washland reserve in the Dearne Valley. Bird is in the centre of the site with redwings at grid ref SE468025. There is a small car park just north of the river Dearne between Adwick upon Dearne and Harlington. From here walk West...

    Yorkshire Birding

I was told earlier that Dick Forsman had been sent the photos and came back with a positive Pallid identification. I saw the bird last night but only very briefly. A lifer for me but I'd like to get a better view and will probably go back.

    The best County for birding?

Born in Rutland, live in Derbys, manage a reserve in South Yorks. Best County.... Norfolk.

Adult Osprey rescued from a Durham wood

Keith is absolutely spot on. Don't give up on the RSPCA. They are not perfect but the biggest problem they face is simply too large a job to do and completely unrealtistic expectations of the public who treat them as a public service. For example - someone finds a dead fox in their front garden...

    What's on in Doñana

As the Matthew referred to above, I can only echo Jose's words. This is the second time I've used Jose (the first back in March - see above) and I've had two superb days. I wouldn't have seen half the stuff (especially in the time available) had I not been with Jose and Donana has quite frankly...

    RSPB pin badges

I agree wholeheartedly but there are some that you won't get in the pin badge boxes anymore and the only way to get them is track them down from private sellers. The trick is telling the rare from the common. I'd say either contact the collectors group linked at the top of this thread or post...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

I've had two this week. Caught up with both King Eider and Red Flanked Bluetail in Suffolk.

    British Birds

Sadly the whole question, as can be seen from the above, has become a little open to debate. As John says, it is above 350 but there is no 'official' body in the UK to adjudicate on such things. In the US, I believe it is the American Birding Association who are judge and jury and publish a run...

Most dangerous animals encountered whilst birding

I came across a rattlesnake in California but was more excited than scared. My mother in law did once accidently chop the rattle off one with a spade whilst in the garden digging. She had no idea it was there, and I'm guessing that now, no-one else ever will either! Scariest moment whilst...

    RSPB pin badges

You can download a current list of badges available here. http://www.rspb.org.uk/supporting/fundraise/individuals/rspb/pinbadges/pinbadgecollectors.asp Download is at top right. Over the years, badges have changed and there are later versions of the same species - eg an earlier sitting...

    What makes a good hide?

So, you all seem to me like the sort of people who visit hides a lot... So what in your opinion makes a good hide? What design features work best to make the birder experience that bit better? What views and aspects work best to give the best spectacle and the birding experience that bit...

    RSPB pin badges

Nope, there isn't a Short Eared Owl. Some of the early ones fetch a lot of money. I used to have a load of the early ones but the only one I still have is the silver skylark that was done for the millennium.

    Yorkshire Birding

Access again tomorrow morning - 6-8am. Meet at the car park for 6am. 95 people turned up this morning. A decision will be taken tomorrow as to access for Tuesday morning but at some point it will have to wind down a bit. The bird has been far more reliable (in terms of views) in the morning...

    Yorkshire Birding

Unless some one has just come forward, then no, not present for its fifth day. It was picked up distantly on call by the assistant warden last night and then seen and heard first thing this morning by the warden. It is on the far side from Wath Ings Hide so arrangements were immediately made to...
