At a mid Devon nature reserve I was photographing birds at a feeding station and along with Great Tits, Blue Tits and Robins, were lots of Coal Tits and this dark bodies tit? It behaved in a similar way to the other Coal Tits and was a similar size. Is it a Coal Tit with Melanism or is it a...

Warbler or? 10june2015, South West UK

The unusual voice of this small bird - about the size of a sparrow - drew me, as I have never heard it before. Although in a small bush it was in a reed bed beside Exeter Canal (South West UK) on 10th June 2015. The voice was a bit like a 1 second rattle, rising slightly, and it kept on...

    Warbler? South West, UK.

2 of these darling little birds visited our garden 2 days ago - 24 March 2013, in a bush and also flitting around in the grass. They are very small - much smaller than a Robin. ...and also extremely 'agitated' in behaviour, only staying still in one spot for a fraction of a second (hence very...

Devon, UK. Small Chubby Diver & Tall Wader

Walking the River Otter today in South East Devon, UK. I came across two birds I have no previous experience of. B1: The first is a small diving bird about half the size of a mallard, it would stay under the water for at least 10 seconds before re-emerging. I have no idea of what this is at...

    strange UK cricket for ID

I thought this was a Great Green Bush Cricket, but its wings are far to short and the hood behind its head has a much shallower angle than in any book I have. Could it be an immature specimen? Will its wings grow later? Is it a deformed specimen? Location was UK, Devon South Coast. Many...

Has anyone here any experience of using one manufactureres eyepiece optics in another manufacturers scopes? It may seem a silly question but... I have an opticron GS 665 GA ED with ED glass and its razor sharp with its 20x HiDEf eyepiece, but then last year I bought a new 'matching' 35x HDF...

    Recording bird song

I would like to capture high audio quality recordings of bird songs, in ambient surroundings. I am not particularly after singular birds at this time, (but who knows for the future!) Therefore I would like a small portable and very quiet recorder with a low noise - preferably stereo -...

Cold wet bird - please advise

A small bird possibly a baby greenfinch, has been in one vulnerable spot in my garden for 30 minutes. I came across it accidentally - when filling the bird feeder - nearly treading on it and all it did was shuffle a few inches and turn its back on me. It is a damp day (about 15degrees...

    Chaffinches with 'poorly' feet !

Both I at home and my wife at work 12 miles away, have noticed that we frequently have Chaffinches with 'strange' feet on our respective feeders. I have tried looking through binoculars to see what the 'club foot appearance' actually is. It appears as if these have a foot which has got some...

    Feeder location advice needed

3 weeks ago I setup a bank of 5 different feeders on a line (well it was a bamboo pole actually) and it is set very near a 6 feet tall wooden fence - at a height of about 5.5 feet. This is about 100 feet away down the garden. But not a single bird has eaten any of the different treats on offer...

Digiscoping can work really well - sample photo

Just wanted to show the type of quality that can be got with an older Fuji F10 compact and a small scope - and of course a bird! Settings and details are written on the photo: Oopsi the manager tells me the photo is a teeny bit too large to upload, so appologies to all as I do not want to...

Dartmoor (UK) Small Bird 9 March 2007

Sorry about the poor photo, but I snapped this bird on the edge of the the moors (Dartmoor, UK) yesterday and can't quite identify it. I wondered if it was either a 1st winter Wheatear, or a female Whinchat. It looked about the same size as a Stonechat (which is what I was up there looking...

Dissapointed with 'Fashion' binoculars. Please recommend...

I started birding about 18 months ago using a very old and second hand pair of binoculars. These 8x40's seemed fairly sharp and bright, but suffered from severe Chromatic Abberation. I then 'upgraded' to some £10 Meade 10x50 porro style binoculars that Lidl's were selling last Christmas and...

    Male / Female Robin query

I can not find any info in my reference books stating any differences between male and female Robins (I am in the south west UK). I often get a pair visit at the moment and other than one looks a bit 'fluffier' and sits perched high watching while the other feeds, they seem the same. Would this...

I have seen a new Zeiss Diascope 65mm at what seems to be a very inexpensive price. Can someone tell me please, do all these have FL lenses. Or do Zeiss do non FL models. I ask because I was going to buy an Opticron (ED model) and wondered which would be better as the prices are not far...

I am slowly learning - but still getting confused. I photographed these yesterday near to Exeter (UK) and am slightly puzzled. 1) I think looks like a Black Headed Gull - BUT... my bird ID book says they have white heads in winter? 2) Are these Godwits again, the beaks are confusing me a bit...
