    Washington WWT

This weekend I'm off on a stag do in Newcastle. We are staying 3.5 miles away from the WWT reserve at Washington, so while the others are playing golf or getting plastered in the bar I plan to visit the reserve on Saturday morning. Can anybody give me some idea of what I might see at this time...

    Today at work

I work in an eight storey office block made mostly of glass. It's just opposite the Trafford Centre in Manchester and I regularly see a wide range of birds but today saw something special. I was on my way out to the lepers corner for my first fag of the day and overheard someone coming back in...

    Swallows on their way

Over the past couple of days there has been a lot of swallow activity around here. Flocks of swallows can be seen passing through and pausing on roof tops and wires. As I write this there are 17 on the telephone wire right outside my home office window. Guess summer is over in England, if it...

    North Lancs and Cumbria

We usually go up to Cumbria four or five times each year, mainly to look at the ospreys ( as you may guess from the name). this year with work commitments this weekend was the only two days I could be sure of until September. Set off about 7:00 am to call at Leighton Moss on the way. Bit of a...

    Scarlet butterfly ID please

I don't know very much about butterflies only able to recognise the Red Admiral and the White Cabbage?? Today I saw a butterfly that was a bright scarlet (same colour as the banner above). It was about half the size of a ones I usually see. I couldn't see any markings other than the superb...

    Goose ID

Today at my local nature reserve I observed a goose in the company of a Canada Goose that had me stumped. It was about the same size as the Canada, but its markings were totally different. It didn't have the black neck with a patch of white on it's throat. It's neck was light grey at the front...

    Ghostly Heron

My day has just started off brilliantly for me. Just down the road from me a stream goes under the road and there are often Herons there early in the morning. This morning I had just set off for work when something big suddenly appeared just by the side of the car. It was a young Heron. I...

    Sprawk view

I work on the top floor of an all glass 8 storey office block near the Trafford Centre. Yesterday afternoon I was sat in a meeting facing the windows when a sparrowhawk flew past about ten feet away and slightly below. I've never seen one that close and from that angle before. The others in the...

    Swallowfest

I witnessed a fantastic spectacle today. There is haymaking going on in the field next to my house and this morning there was obviously a lot of insects. A mixed flock of swallows and house martins started arriving about 8:00 am. An hour or so later there were over a hundred flying over the...

    Wood Pigeon

I have a couple of feeders with sunflower seeds. Normally I get Greenfinches and Collared doves. Because of the size of the collared doves I position the feeders so that the doves can sit on the arms coming off the pole and reach the holes. Today when I got back from some shopping I looked out...

    Where to go

Don't know if this is the right place but...... I'm off work next week and fancy going out at least two days, probably three. One of the days will be to Leighton Moss, which is about 75 miles away from where I live near Manchester. Thats about as far as I want to travel. Anyone got any...

    Just like London buses

What a brilliant weekend. Decided because of the good weather to go to the lakes. Went up a couple of weeks ago to watch the ospreys and the cloud was so low the eyrie was above the cloud line. Decided to stop at Leighton Moss on the way for a couple of hours and some breakfast. Walked into...

    GW sighting

Just got back from one of them team building thingys at a posh hotel near Chester. Yesterday I popped out to satisfy one of my vices, i.e. having a fag. I was leaning on a rail when about 15 yards away a bird flew out of the nearby woods. I could tell it was something I hadn't seen very often...

    Lake district osprey chicks

Two of the three eggs have hatched within a few hours of each other. It was expected one may hatch with another about 24 hours later, but a chick arrived at 11pm last night and the next hatched just before 8am this morning. Wonder if the third will hatch? No-Ring brought breakfast for his wife...

    Starling for breakfast

About ten minutes ago I was in the garden(or should that be jungle) mowing the elephant grass and filling the feeders and water bowls, when I heard a bird call I didn't recognise. When I looked up there was a flock off about thirty starlings flying towards me. They were making the calls that I...

    Black bird with white rump

Just driving back to work when a bird flew across the road in front of me. It was going from a area of shrub to a wooded area. It was about the size of a blackbird and was either black or dark brown. I thought it was a blackbird until a saw it had white bar across the rump area. Anyone know what...

Ordered my IS60 plus 15-54 eyepiece at 10am yesterday. I paid the extra £4 for delivery before 12:30pm. The scope arrived at 10:50am today. Great servive from Warehouse Express. So I went out for a couple of hours to try it out. I must say I'm impressed. This is my first scope so I can't compare...

    Watergrove

Just took delivery of my first ever scope today so decided to go out on my local patch at Watergrove reservoir to try it out. The highlight of the day was watching a sparrowhawk chasing a mistle thrush. Don't know if it caught it because they flew into pine trees and I lost sight of them. Two...

    Tripod and head for scope

I need some advice please. I've just taken delivery of an Opticron IS60, but unfortunately it fit on the Hama tripod I use for my photography. Can anyone recommend a reasonable tripod with head, don't want to spend too much as I spent most of my spare money this month on the scope.

    Opticron 18-54x zoom for IS60

I've just ordered an IS60 scope but unfortunately they didn't have the 15-45x pro zoom I wanted. Being an impatient chap and not wishing to wait I ordered the 18-54x zoom which was £20 cheaper. Does anyone know what kind of performance I can expect compared with the pro zoom?
