    Warbler id?

Ireland:Warbler id? Only got a couple of quick sightings, as it flew to what appeared to be ground nest (scrub at edge of meadow). Birds call has thrown me, two ascending notes repeated over a over again as it moved through hedgrow gathering food.

    Deer hunting my way!

I've often spent a few hours birding in the Phoenix Park in Dublin, it's one spot I'm nearly always guaranteed to see Jay with large flocks of Fieldfare and Redwing each winter. However it also holds a large herd, (560 as I found out Sunday) of wild Fallow deer with some Sika also. Though they...

    Finchville!

I took a trip out early on Sunday morning with a plan to cover Malahide estuary, however on arrival most of the estaury was frozen over bar the middle channel so even using the scope to id birds proved rather pointless. Onward to Rogerstown Estaury (Birdwatch Ireland Reserve)and a quick trip to...

This an early Summer Plumage Godwit?

Took this shot at the weekend beyond decent range for my digiscoping skills (ie not under my nose) so apologies for really poor quality. I was watching waders way out on the ice on the mudflats when a few Black Tail Godwit flew up and revealed this bird behind them. It turned once showing rusty...

A Common Old Bird Or ?

While pounding the shores of my local estuary in Malahide I've become enthralled with one of the local residents. No they are not newcomers, as a kid my father used to take us to feed them (not the same one's :-O) on fine weekends. I've always tended to overlook them as being, well just common...

    First Outing of 08 Brrrrrrrrr...

Three days later and I would have to pick what is one of the coldest days of winter to date to get out for the first birding of the year. Despite mutiple layers of clothing, thermal gloves etc the biting easterly and sleet showers won the day. I had hoped for a Blackredstart but none seen. I did...

    Garden mix to end 07

The Garden has been very quiet until the last two weeks, can only assume food in the local countryside has been plentiful, so it is nice to see the return of the old fav's in time for the new year..

    Sunday's Stroll

I took a chance with the weather this morning and went for a stroll along the local estuary. Tide was low so it was a mixed bag with Geese and Curlew moving off to feed on grassland and some waders coming in to roost.

    Good to get out again

Took a quick trip around the coast during the week as I had a bit of time off and all the Santa shopping was done. Must say it was wonderful to be back in the field again to see real birds and not the metal type..

    Mondays stroll around Malahide

With a stiff South Easterly blowing and rain in the air I hit Malahide again this morning, not too early mind you as tide wouldn't begin to turn till around 9:30am. Water levels were still high enough along the inner esturay but a quick check of the first exposed mud showed a Ruff feeding among...

1 good reason to use a lens filter

Walking with the dogs this afternoon, camera slung over shoulder stepped over an old wall when camera slipped from my hand...Ouch!! Luckily the only damage was to the filter. I dread to think of the damage to the front of the lens if I didn't always have a filter screwed on permanently..:eek!:

    Friday's stroll along the coast

Some pics from my wander along the North Dublin coast today. Weather was fine and variety and numbers of some birds on the up (approx 300 Shellduck feeding across the mouth of Rogerstown estuary). Red Brested Merganser and Great Crested Grebe were showing well (1/2mile out :-O) in Malahide..

    Sunday's walk, a few Pics

Some pics from Sunday morning ‘s trip around the Outer Estuary at Malahide. In all 120 Brent counted, up 30 from last weekend, juveniles can be seen with the stripe effect on secondary feathers and lacking white neck patch. Big numbers of Redshank are present along with Lapwing, Golden Plover...

    Any Mipipit Experts?

Any Mippit Experts? Hi All I'm slow in posting (broken usb camera cable :C) these pics taken last Sunday. I set out early in bright sunshine to the estaury only to be shrouded in a dense fog 30 mins into my walk. As I watched the fog roll in a flock of birds came down, settling on a few trees...

    Following in Dafi's Movie footsteps

While out at the estaury today I saw this Black Tail Godwit feeding in a pool. After a couple of snaps it broke into it's feeding frenzy, Dafi's Vid came to mind so I quickly switched the camera onto movie. Couldn't resist adding the song...;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKXhm9hVMiA

    Juv Redshank? Ireland

Apologies for quality, overcast and taken in rain shower. Bird landed on the water swimming in through the Godwit wading onto the shore making me think Spotted first, legs appeared more yellow than orange/red of Redshank or Spotted I've seen before and Bill was darker than other Reds further up...

    Dropped by for a 'Chat'

A couple of non wader pics from this morning's estuary walk. Some nice birds seen but attempts digiscoping were a failure :C, oh well will keep practising... While sitting in the grass watching some Green Sandpiper in the freshwater channels I looked around to see what all the twittering was and...
