    Peregrine behaviour

Thanks fugl - I suppose this is why they make such good falconers' birds. The recovery of the peregrine has been one of the great good-news stories of the last 30 years. Fabulous birds.

    Peregrine behaviour

Just back from a holiday in Cambodia where we were lucky enough to take a trip into the magnificent Prek Toal wetlands reserve. Our guide was surprised when we spotted a peregrine as they apparently quite scarce there, but what was unusual was the way the bird (a female) was clearly following...

    Optolyth 10x40 binoculars wanted

I've just lost my treasured 10x40 Optolyth binocs.- the old type with the rubber armour. I'm feeling very down about it. Anyone got a pair they want to sell? Or can anyone recommend another pair of lightweight armoured binoculars up to about £300?

    Atlas listing

Hi all. Did tetrad SP63E this afternoon. It's an ordinary bit of Buckinghamshire but did see a Helmeted Guineafowl in a field a good half mile from any dwelling. It was late afternoon and it eventually went into a wood presumably to roost. Are these birds feral nowadays?
  5. Egret and crocodile

    Egret and crocodile

This egret was fascinated by the young croc - but never quite got within snapping distance.
  6. Chital deer

    Chital deer

This Chital's camouflage was so good we nearly missed it, even though it was just a few yards away.
  7. Bengal Tigress

    Bengal Tigress

We saw this 3 year old tigress quite closely (about 20 feet away) but she was very shy.
  8. Jungle Babblers

    Jungle Babblers

This pair of preening Jungle Babblers were quite tame. I got within about ten feet.

    Raven in Chipping Norton

I saw a Raven just south of Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire today. I knew they were in Warwickshire but didn't know they were more widespread. Do any of you have more information on their distribution in this area?

    House Pharoe

Rameses II would not have been impressed with this cheeky sparrow nesting in his relief!

    Grey Wagtail in my garden!

Yes, water seems to be the common denominator. The Coop car park drains very badly so there often massive puddles.

    Grey Wagtail in my garden!

Yes, Grey Wags seem to be increasingly seen in urban areas but they are very site specific. In Brackley (Northants) for instance, I see them every winter but only in the Coop car park or in nearby Halls Lane - never anywhere else. There must be something there that they like. I wonder what it is...

At last at last a Blackcap in my garden

Yep, had a male here in North Bucks for last few days. Only the third I've ever seen in Winter.

    Waxwings feeding on Larch

On the subject of Waxwings, I've heard of the invasion but not seen any. Does anyone know of any in the Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire areas just now?

American Robin is No more ?

Seem to remember a Buff Breasted Sandpiper shuffling off its mortal coil in the talons of a Sparrowhawk at Draycote Reservoir a few years ago. I wonder why predators like rarities? According BWP, Budgerigars make up no less than 9.3% of a Hobby's diet in Berlin!

    Go to Kenya

Thanks for the info on BES, Helen. I've added it to my favourites for the next visit to East Africa, which I think will be very soon!

    Go to Kenya

You're right about the security at Nairobi airport Helen. Embarassingly, I even had to explain why my Polygrip denture fix was in my pocket! I'm sure you're right about Kenya's problems. In the Aberdares area every scrap of land outside the park itself seems destined for subsistence agriculture...

    Go to Kenya

We've just returned from a safari in Kenya and I'd urge anyone to go there. After just 4 days we'd got well over a hundred species and that's before we got to the Masai Mara where I simply lost track. The Masai Mara is the most spectacular wildlife place I've ever been to in my 47 years on this...

    Ring Necked Parakeets

We've got at least one pair of Ring Necked Parakeets here in Turweston, north Bucks. I watched their noisy display flights in May and I hoped they might even nest in the large box I'd put in our big lime tree for Jackdaws. I saw the male near it once but it wasn't used. I also saw a parakeet...

    Favourite Bird Artist

Have to agree about Eric Ennion - absolutely brilliant. By the way, I'm trying to compile a catalogue raisonne of all the etchings made by Winifred Austen, a superb bird artist who died in 1964. If anyone knows anything about her I'd be interested. She lived at Orford in Suffolk.

    Waxwing Invasion?

I remember chasing all over the place in the '95 invasion. Just missed half a dozen outside the post office in Over Norton and then I got lost in Towcester's only council estate. Still haven't seen one! Maybe this year

    Hello

Hello all. I live in Turweston in Buckinghamshire and I've been a birdwatcher for pretty well all the 40 years or so I can remember.
