    Orchids of Samos

While people are waiting for the UK orchid season to get underway, perhaps they might enjoy reading about my recent trip to the Greek island of Samos, where I saw and photographed 27 different orchids (as well as over 20 butterfly species). By contrast with the UK, the Greek season appears to...

Chelmos, Erimanthos, Mainalo: A Peloponnesian Butterflies Trip, 28/06/12 – 08/07/12

What follows is a trip report for my recent visit to the Northern and Central Peloponnese in Greece in search of butterflies. It will begin with an overview of the trip and some key logistics information, and then continue with day-by-day accounts, photos, and lists, concluding with some final...

Chelmos, Erimanthos, Mainalo: A Peloponnesian Butterflies Trip, 28/06/12 – 08/07/12

A butterfly trip, so I won't post this here in the birding trip reports section. However, I will post it in a new thread in the butterflies forum: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=235365, along with a similar set of postings over on ukbutterflies.co.uk. Hope you enjoy the read! Cheers, D

    CactusD's List for 2012

Another year, another list! I’m not expecting to come anywhere close to last year’s total of 244 birds seen, since I have no dedicated overseas birding trips planned, and work + childcare will demand my attention back home. I am hoping to get away to Greece in the summer, partly for...

Honey Buzzard or Goshawk – Lesvos

I'd assumed that this was a Honey Buzzard, but now it's been suggested to me that it's a Goshawk. It has to be one or the other, I think (and it was clearly rather larger than the Hooded Crow which was mobbing it). Any other suggestions either way? The dark head is a function of shadow cast by...

    Lesvos 14-27th April 2011

I'm putting together a report and list for my trip last month; since I'm already running a year-list here, I'll just link to that, where you can see a day-by-day account of my visit, inc. photos, from post #40 on page 2. Here's the link to the thread...

    Spider ID, living-room wall, Banbury

Found this scurrying around our living-room this evening. Looks like a hunting spider of some kind, but I can't narrow down the genus/species. Any ideas? Cheers, Dave

    Parakeet ID, Madrid

A quick and long-standing assumption was that this was Rose-Ringed Parakeet (seen in a park in Madrid a few years back); but on closer (and more circumspect :t:) reflection it looks more like Monk Parakeet. Am I right? Sorry for the poor quality pic: pre-DSLR days for me!

    Gull ID (confirmation?)

Hi all, Got my Olsen and Larsson Gull ID Guide for Xmas from the lovely wife :eek!: ;) So thought I'd have my first go at what (for me!) is a rather tricky pursuit: juvenile gull IDs... Anyway, at Draycote Reservoir, Warwickshire this morning, I reckoned this was a first-winter Great...

    CactusD's List 2011

Hello again all, I've decided on another list for the third year in a row. Things *may* turn out a little more exciting this year, since we are hoping to be in Lesvos in April, and I may be in either Greece or the East Coast of the US later in the year; I also have a little more time on my hands...

Wader ID - Slimbridge - another view

Thanks for the help with the Little Stints ID from yesterday; I was so pleased with the Little Stint that I completely overlooked the additional possibility... Dan Pointon raised the poss. of Curlew Sand among the Dunlin here, so I have a couple of shots to show (always useful to take record...

    Wader ID - Slimbridge

At Slimbridge today, looking out from the Zeiss hide produced good views of nice waders, inc. Spotted Redshanks. I've got a record shot here of interest: in particular, the two small waders in the left of the image - clearly they're smaller than the Dunlins in the right hand side. I'm...

    Long-eared Owl, Derbys.

Was lucky enough to find this owl this morning, pretty sure it's a LEO (a lifer); the facial disk seems quite pale: is this normal, possibly an indication of age or sex? Cheers, Dave

    Pipit ID Farmoor

While searching for yellow wagtails in the water treatment works, I discovered the following bird skulking in the bushes along with the other obvious yellow wag migrants. Other birders who viewed it were happy that I had refound the previous day's scandanavian rock pipit, and I edited the pic...

Any ideas? - Irvine Coast, Ayrshire, Scotland

A very distant offshore view (pooly phonescoped) of a bird which I saw dive, and which my field notes tell me had white flanks. Seen 25th March. Any ideas at all?

Marsh or Willow? Grimsbury Res., Banbury

Marsh or Willow Tit? Grimsbury Res., Banbury I had this down as Marsh Tit because of the two-tone cheek and small bib, but now I'm not sure since I can't see any bill spot, and I know Willow Tit is found at this site (and has been recorded already this year). The harsh lighting has me confused...

    CactusD's List 2010

Hello again! Not sure what this year will hold bird-wise, since my wife and I have an imminent arrival (see Maenad's list here). However, I'll still manage a few forays in the UK as last year, and perhaps one or two trips further afield: we'll have to see. I'll try to provide pics as I go...

    Gull ID Northants

One from local Boddington Reservoir. My excuse for being rubbish at Gulls is that I'm waiting for the new Collins! But perhaps I should make learning Gulls my new-year's resolution ;) So, is this just a Herring Gull (of some kind), or something else? The bill ring looks a little unusual to me...

    Duck IDs Warwicks

Hi all, Hope you can help out with these female ducks - wondering whether there's a scaup here, or something more unusual at least than a standard female tuftie? I think these are two different birds, seen from opposite ends of East Marsh, at Brandon Marsh WWT today. Thanks v much, Dave

    Pipit, Otmoor

I'd like to think this is Water Pipit, esp. since one has been reported, and was seen earlier this am; it looks like one to me from Collins. So help with getting a new life tick would be great! |=)| Of course, if I'm wrong, ID guidance would be much appreciated. |:(| Cheers, Dave

    Mostly Warblers: Delphi, Greece

Six Birds to ID: Delphi, Greece Hi all, I'd appreciate some help with these from Delphi, Greece, in and around the archaeological site this week, where the mulberry and almond trees were very accommodating to the warblers, whose precise identity is in need of clarification! Bird 1, a couple of...

    Greek Buntings

Hi all, I'm beginning to think about the birds I might see on my trip to Greece next month. In reviewing some previous snapshots (Delphi, mountain foothills), I originally thought that both of these were Rock Buntings, but I'm now sure that the first is a Cirl Bunting (esp. now I remember its...

    Warbler ID - Oxfordshire UK

Any ideas about this one? I've a few shots, but nothing very clear, and I didn't hear any song. Looks a bit like a Sedge, but seems too pale to me, and eyestripe doesn't seem crisp enough. Cheers, D

    Juvenile Dunnock(?)

I'm reasonably sure this is a juvenile Dunnock, but since I don't think I've seen one before I thought I'd better check. It looks pretty Dunnock-like to me... Cheers, D
