    Approx. 40% of the weight of a black sunflower seed is the shell (ranges 35% - 45%). If you take this into account, from most suppliers sunflower hearts and black sunflower are usually pretty close in price.

    I fought big battles last year trying to keep pigeons and collared doves off my feeders. In the end the best way I found was to give them an easier food source somewhere else, with just cheap seed.
