    Gull, London, Feb 16

Thanks - I thought the bill was quite bulky but I guess there's a lot of variance. The rest seems to stack up though...

Any thoughts on this long-billed individual? Thanks.

Lepidoptera dealer encouraging killing of birds.

Tempting to send a sarcastic message via the contact page, but probably best not to alert them to any criticism and hope the wildlife crime unit deal with it.

    Tawny or Richard's Pipit?

There are a couple of good Richard's/Blyth's comparison flight shots on this post: http://birdingbeijing.com/2012/05/04/blyths-pipits-and-more/ It looks a bit long tailed for Blyth's.

    Yorkshire Birding

Signed. I was at Spurn for a few hours today (quiet day, Merlin highlight!) and read the planning application notice. It seems Sandy Beaches are moving inland as the information suggests the phased clearance of the existing site? There's no getting away from it, caravan sites are a bloody...

    Scillonian hand luggage

Just travelled back yesterday. At St Mary's I was asked if I wanted to wheel my large case on (with a rucksack and camera which I had as hand luggage) or put it in the container. So while I can't say for certain what the restrictions are they seem very relaxed about what you carry on (or what...

    Spurn YWT - road closed

Can't work out from that if the funding is going to restore the road? Or is the plan to ferry people down on some money-extracting vehicle? Not that I get the chance very often, but driving down to the point early morning is (was) one of the highlights of birding in this country; it would be a...

    Alison Steadman's Shetland ITV1 Part1/1 21.00-22.00pm Tuesday 24/6/2014

You're all being too kind, it was a bloody awful programme. Alison Steadman is indeed a very good actor, but ironically I got the feeling she couldn't cover up the fact that she couldn't wait to get back to London! Shetland doesn't need a celebrity to make it look interesting!!

    Bournemouth area birding break

There is a good bus service from Bournemouth to the ferry at Sandbanks for Brownsea Island. It's quite a pricey day out though - ferry, National Trust entry, then entry into the Dorset Wildlife Trust reserve once you're on the island! Great views of the terns etc from the hide though.

    Bournemouth area birding break

I was there on the beach a couple of weeks ago. Check out the gulls - at least one Med Gull is patrolling up and down on a regular basis!

    Acro London

This is the only other shot I have of the bird, unfortunately some of the primaries are obscured by a reed. However, the bird has moved and the primary that was displaced is now back in formation. The emargination appears low down, unless this is one of the feathers going under the adjacent...

Thanks for all the comments & opinions, very interesting as always. Later, I will see if I have any other shots, different angles, cropped nostrils etc! Tom

    Acro London

Anyone else find this a little round headed and short stubby billed for the obvious? I watched it for about 20 seconds before it moved on, no call / song.

Sounds like this one - photo taken at Titchwell in Feb. Adult female, ringed southern Iceland June 2012, subsequently seen at Leighton Moss in April 2013, back to Iceland Spring 2013, Oare Marshes, then Frampton Marshes last Autumn, then Titchwell.

If you are locating them on song, they don't really get going into full flow until the end of the month / early May.

    Memory Card for D7100

I use a D7100 and previously used the 45mb versions of Sandisk. I recently needed some extra for a short holiday so I opted for a couple of 16gb 95MB. I didn't expect much, but it is actually really noticeable in terms of how quickly the buffer clears compared with the 45mb cards, even when we...
