    Uncertains from Whitefish Point, Michigan

Just got back from Whitefish Point in Michigan's upper penninsula. Here are a few that I'm not sure of. I know that a couple of these are pretty bad shots, but I wonder if ID is stil possible. 1) Female finch, WPBO. Pretty sure it's a female Purple Finch, as it was with a male Purple. 2)...

marshland sparrow for ID- SE Michigan, USA

I wrote this guy off as a song sparrow when I first saw him, but looking closer the facial markings look more pronounced and contrasted than the other Songs I saw. Is it possible that this is of a rarer breed? I would be suprised if it was, but I think it's worth a shot!

    Whitefish Point Spring Fling?

We are planning to go to Whitefish Point on April 23-25 for the spring migration. I read an article about it and it sounded great, but I was wondering if anyone who's been there can give me an idea of what kinds of birds they saw, what it was like, and what to expect, so we know what we're...

    Duck hybrid, SE Michigan USA

My friend sent me a picture of this duck in his canal, I'm guessing it's some sort of domestic/wild mallard hybrid. Is it? It's next to a regular Mallard so you can see it's quite large... Thanks!

More winter ducks, SE Michigan, USA

Stopped to look at some of the ducks, they were mostly Canvasbacks. But I think I may have found a few non-Canvasbacks in these pictures (terrible shots, I know, but are they still IDable?) My guesses: 1) Maybe a female Bufflehead? Bill doesn't quite match up for me... 2) Another fem...

    Woodpecker drumming, SE Michigan USA

I am used to the quiet, one-peck-at-a-time sounds of the Downy, Hairy, and Red-bellied Woodpeckers. So I was surprised to hear, a few minutes ago, a machine-gun like rapid pecking charictaristic to woodpeckers. I tried to get my camera to record the sound, but I couldn't find it. Each round of...

Where to put up a nestbox & how to attract tennants

We've never put up a nestbox before, but we have one thats 6'' x 7'' and 9'' tall, with an entrance hole 1 and a half inches in diameter 7'' above the base. It's a small yard but we have several feeders. I am guessing we should put up the box in the back of the yard where it is less likely to be...

    Tree ID, Sanibel Island, Florida

We were taking pictures of this racoon pair in a tree 7 months ago and tonight I realized that the tree species was unlike one that I'd ever seen. I've included the berries and the leaves. Thanks!

    Any crossbills this winter?

Last year I was lucky enough to frequently see a flock of White-winged Crossbills on the conifers around the yard, and it seemed a lot of other people on birdforum saw the same. I haven't seen any crossbills this winter, but it has been relatively warm. Has anyone seen any crossbills in their...

Are frozen marshes still good birding?

We have a marsh in our area, across the road from a bay 9 miles wide. The marsh is 2 and a half square miles and its water channels are 1 to 2 and half feet deep in the summer. In the summer we get warblers and herons and sandhill cranes and swallows and Common Snipes, it's really great. I was...

Sparrow help please--- SE Michigan, USA

I've recently started filming birds, since we got a new camera, and after I've collected footage of birds from all the seasons I hope to make an ameture "documentary" of the birds in my local area. Obvioulsly this is one of my worse shots, but this bird stumped me. Chipping Sparrow? American...

    Bird Riddles Quiz

Taking my inspiration from Angnix's Wisconsin Eyes thread, I decided to make a riddle thread. Figure out the riddle and you'll get a bird's name. I'll try to incorporate some European birds in there as well. An example: Waterfowl in disguise = Masked Duck. Sometimes it will include the full...

Impossible IDs... bad shots... SE Michigan, USA

as the title says, I can't expect these to be identifiable!!! The whitish bird (chickadee?) was with chickadees, and the other birds (waxwings?) were in a flock with waxwings. Sorry, probably impossible to ID, but... (#4 I'm pretty sure is a waxwing)

The Cub's Quiz of American birds (eastern) #2

Welcome to my second Quiz! This will be mostly like my last one except I'll be taking a certain rule from the Falcon's quiz that I though was a good idea: For every wrong answer of a question, that question's point value will increase by one. But of course your own wrong answers don't boost the...

    Your latest Michigan bird

Mine is a Blue-winged Warbler, seen Aug. 12, 2009 at 7:30 am, St. Clair County. No picture was taken, sadly it was still too dark. It was with a Yellow Warbler. Other notable birds for me during that outing were Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Indigo Buntings. What about you?

How many birds have you seen around your local patch?

My patch includes several habitats, like the river which is great for duck viewing in the winter the nature trail in our park which has a variety of songbirds, the wetlands which provide many different types of birds, and the open fields a bit more inland. So, with all these habitats, here's my...
