Colombia - Manizales: What to do?

I agree. I think you could also be at Rio Blanco a bit later than two as it's only an hour to El Bosque. Perhaps stay until four.

Colombia - Manizales: What to do?

The food is great tho relatively pricey at El Bosque. They don't offer breakfast to takeaway but you don't need it one day there because Crescent-faced Antpitta feeding is like 8am. On the other day, you can get it at Rio Blanco. The owner of El Bosque speaks English and can arrange guides /...

Colombia - Manizales: What to do?

I think Termales to Rio Blanco is too far to go early morning (maybe 90 minutes). I couldn't work out how to book Termales so stayed at El Bosque two nights. It's very nice even if we had problems with a leaky roof which made all my friend's clothes wet and destroyed his book. They did move us...

Colombia - Manizales: What to do?

Daniel Munoz. Perhaps request him. It's full day but is not expensive. I think there are different prices for private or group. We were joined by one other birder one day. You get the choice of half or full day.

Colombia - Manizales: What to do?

For guides for Nevados, try Luz Osorio Arias or Daniel Munoz. Both very good. They will take you to Termales as part of a Nevados tour.

Colombia - Manizales: What to do?

Rio Blanco is excellent, especially if you get guide Daniel. You are allowed to walk round yourself in breaks and they no longer have set birding times. I'd suggest one day there and one day Hacienda El Bosque for the first couple of hours and then up Nevados del Ruiz. You will need a car or...

Red grouse near Buxton and anything else . Advise please

Short-eared Owl is possible but not likely. I have not been in the area this year so don't know if any around but Goyt Valley or Swallow Moss usual sites.

Red grouse near Buxton and anything else . Advise please

Hi Rene, Red Grouse is pretty common in moorland areas. Goyt Valley, Swallow Moss, Kinder and Beeley Moor as good as any. Dipper on the rivers such as in Chee Dale. Otherwise it is a pretty quiet time of year. Wheatear may have arrived as may Ring Ouzel but Pied Flycatcher and Redstart will be...

    Kuusamo advice

Hi all, I'm planning my next adventure probably for the end of May / early June. Very up in the air what I will do (Canada, Taiwan, Georgia, Poland and Estonia have crossed my mind) but now looking at Finland. Finnature have availability for their Oulu trip in early June but their Kuusamoo...

Travel from Manizles to Santa Marta

For the Antpittas, yes, but not much more beyond that. The photo opportunities are best at Hacienda El Bosque, which has a Grey-breasted Mountain Toucan feeder / photography station although the number of species there is limited.

Travel from Manizles to Santa Marta

I agree - don't skip Manizales. Pereira is a 2 hour drive so should not be a problem to travel there. One question, if you are on a budget, why stay at Hotel Tinamu? There is not a massive amount of specialities there. I recommend staying at Rio Blanco. It's relatively basic but the night...

Uganda and Rwanda: 1 to 22 June 2024

The quote I got from Crammy Wanyama of Avian Safaris (who is used by manay of the major companies) for 14 days in late 2021 was $3,281 per person if there were 3 people. This did not include $1000 for gorilla tracking. I imagine the cost would have gone up substantially since then but the major...

Uganda and Rwanda: 1 to 22 June 2024

These prices are high given a respected local guide quoted me about half that for Uganda a few years ago. The Uganda trip is 16 days but Rwanda is only 6.

Morocco again! Guelmim, Agadir and Oukaimeden

Yes, no charge for parking by the Eco Museum. Road is shut past there but you can walk. We found Desert Sparrow independently. It was singing on my tent! I think Egyptian Nightjar would be the really tricky one.

Morocco again! Guelmim, Agadir and Oukaimeden

Independently. All information is readily available on here or on ebird. A guide is not required except in Merzouga where you need a 4x4 to drive in the desert.

Morocco again! Guelmim, Agadir and Oukaimeden

Yes, by Eco Museum parking area in the morning was best. The only fee we had to pay was to be shown the roosting Nightjar. Plain Martin was more tricky but we tracked them down by the river maybe 2km from Palmeriae de Massa.

Morocco again! Guelmim, Agadir and Oukaimeden

Back from another very successful trip to Morocco with 3 friends. Despite feeling a bit ill the whole time, managed to get all 6 of my potential lifers. After going from Marrakech to Merzouga last year, this time we flew to Agadir before heading south towards Guelmim before finishing at...

Looking for help on our itinerary for a first visit yo Colombia

As you only have a week, I'd recommend spending 3 or 4 nights at Montezuma and 3 or 4 nights round Manizales. Alternatively you could do Cali area, there is enough in that area for a week. Maybe 3 nights km 18, 3 nights San Cipriano or you could stay at Araucana Lodge if you prefer something...

General advice for an independent Colombia trip, and blue bearded helmetcrest

Sylvana Travel can arrange transport. I don't recommend driving in Northern Colombia. My favourite places were Montezuma and San Cipriano.

General advice for an independent Colombia trip, and blue bearded helmetcrest

The top two places to go are San Cipriano (not in Gallardy's report but he went a few years after) and Montezuma. Both fantastic. I also recommend contacting Diego Espitia for the Tolima endemics, Yellow-eared Parrrot and Fuertes' Parrot. Some more tips in my thread here: Independent Colombia...
