    Texas Lower Rio Grande Valley

Thanks. If I took this trip 20 years ago there is no way I could see nearly as many birds. With ebird research ahead of time, real time alerts, bird guides and sounds on my phone and GPS to allow me to easily get from place to place it makes things much easier now.

    Texas Lower Rio Grande Valley

Thanks for the reply. We were flying in and out of Houston so we stayed 1 night a Corpus Christi, then 2 nights in McAllen and then one night back in Corpus Christi on the way back to the airport.

    Texas Lower Rio Grande Valley

Just got back from a trip to the Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Spent 3 days birding there. Had over 120 species with 42 life birds which was great. Got to see the first state record of a Smooth-billed Ani which was cool. I put together a video slide show a number of birds: This google...

    Corpus Christi, TX Sparrow

Makes sense. I was considering Lincoln's. It just looked a bit muted on the patterning to me and wasn't sure if if it might be something else. Thanks

Not sure what species of Sparrow this is. What do you think? Taken about 5 days ago near Corpus Christi, TX, USA

McAllen TX - warbler like bird

This was taken at Bentsen RGV reserve on Tuesday. Nearest thing I can think of is a Pine Warbler based on size, bill. coloring and expected birds. The front of the eye ring looks a bit off though for a Pine Warbler. These are the best photos I got unfortunately.

    Madagascar Advice Request

My wife, 13 yo daughter and I will be visiting Madagascar in the middle of July for about 19 days. We are planning to hire a guide for a custom trip. We are really fond of wildlife (including birds - but not a hardcore birding trip) and want to experience as much diversity as possible. So far...

BlackRapid Alternatives? - shoulder pain with new lens

Ben, you could try adding extra padding and rotating it between shoulders after a certain amount of time. I use the Black Rapid to carry 1DX with 2x with 600 f4II. This is about 13 pounds. It's not great but I'm usually okay for 4-6 hours up to 4 miles walking. I have added extra padding to my...

    Which Super Telephoto ??

My most used lens/camera combo is the 600 F4 II with 2X on the Canon 1DX2. I carry this around on a black rapid strap and shoot hand held most of the time. This works really well for me. The new 1DX2 has enhanced focusing abilities so I can use all points if I want on this f8 setup. I recently...

    Canon lens.

In the US the price difference is about $800. I guess it's much more in the UK.

You might also consider the 400 f4 DO IS II. This lens has gotten rave reviews.

    Micro adjustment 7D MK11

Here's another option called Dot Tune https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zE50jCUPhM It is a different method and I prefer it. You also don't need to snap a single shot or view anything on a computer.

    7D MK11 ISO Query

I suspect you are asking this because it shows as grayed out. If this is the case it means you have Highlight tone Priority set. You would need to turn that off. Doug

American Golden Plover - WA USA

I don't think a Black-bellied can have the golden/yellow plumage areas like this one shows on its back. I think it is either Pacific or American. Pacifics certainly are not rare this time of year on the WA state coast.

American Golden Plover - WA USA

Here's a photo of a Golden Plover today from the WA State coast near Ocean Shores. There were 10 Golden Plovers and most of them seemed to be Pacific however this one I'm thinking it might be American. The face is white with no hint of yellow and the cap is fairly dark. I think it is molting and...

Canon 7D Mk II is announced and available for pre-order

I haven't noticed image quality drop-offs when adding 1.4 extender to 400 f5.6 or 100-400 IS II or adding the 2X to the 600f4. Certainly the focus slows down and struggles a bit more in low light. I do still have issues with consistency with the 7D2 hitting sharp focus with all lenses. 1DX and...

    7D2 BIF help needed

sounds good. you might take a look at this old thread where the guy who popularized Bump focus described it http://www.birdphotographers.net/forums/showthread.php/1949-Bumping-the-focus-for-BIF

    7D2 BIF help needed

This is true for the technique of holding continuous focus. However another technique used by some for BIF is to only press the focus button sparingly to keep the bird close to focus until you feel the time is right for photos. Some refer to this as "bump" focus because you only occasionally...

    7D2 BIF help needed

I don't think use of Back Button Focus is going to improve flight photography when you are trying to track a bird in flight. BBF might be helpful if you know where they are flying to and can shoot as the bird approaches. I've used BBF for about 3 years now. I'm now testing out going back to...

    7D2 BIF help needed

From your flickr page it looks like you have had some success with BIF with sky as the background. Can you share the settings you are using for that and we might be able to make some suggestions. What case are you using and what focus point configuration have you tried? I think case 1 and...

    7d m11 firmware

I just updated mine last night and then ran though AFMA using the DotTune process for my 600mm lens bar and with 1.4 and 2x extenders. Interestingly the 600mm increased by 1, 840mm increased by 4 and 1,200mm increased by 10. I seen someone mention that AFMA can change with temperture so I ran...

    7d m11 firmware

I've seen a few folks on other forums mentioned improved results. Of all the folks reporting problems one might think about them in 3 groups; those with major focus issues which some people have had success changing out bodies or sending them to Canon, those with inconsistencies or occasional...

Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS USM

The new 100-400 IS II is a fantastic lens. What about selling the 400f5.6 and getting the 100-400 IS II and that way you won't need two lenses.
