Urgent - the birds in Italy need your help

We may have a range of opinions on the usefulness of on-line petitions but I beg you to read on. The Italian parliament is debating a bill which, if passed, could have a devatating effect on the birds in that country. LIPU, BirdLife in Italy, have an on-line petition at...

    Feathers from Switzerland

Posting for a friend who recently found these in his large garden about 840m asl. He says, "Shafts shattered. Downy feathers no longer available but those found earlier were boldly barred grey and black." Local concensus is settling on domestic hen, perhaps a Coucou de Rennes but confirmation...

    Pyrenean coincidence

Back in August 2010 we saw this eagle perching on top of a conifer at Plateau de Saugué in the French mountains just north of Gavarnie. Nothing too unusual about that, but last month we were at the same place and looking at the same tree because: Certainly seems to be favoured by the...

    French Pyrenees autumn 2023

Working though images from a recent trip I have a couple I'd like to be more certain of and any help would be appreciated but please give reasons so I can learn. I'm useless with gulls and even more so if they are not adult, my instinct is to fall back on LBBG but a more ceratin ID would be...

Just looking through some images from 2016 which I labelled at the time as Chiffchaff and now I'm hacing doubts. The PP seems too long and the colouration - should I rename them as Willow Warbler? Thanks,

Liguria, Italy, Oct 22 long shot

I received this qestion a few days ago and I'm not sure how to answer it. My gut feeling is Griffon but I'm far from sure so perhaps those better qualified might help? Last week we stayed in the Ligurian Alps in the Vallee Argentina. Whilst climbing Langen Col we saw an enormous bird, which I...

    Rusty warbler, French Pyrenees

The rusty is me not the birds! A small flock of what appeared to be warblers caught my attention because of unusually frenetic behaviour on a very hot day, they were all constantly on the move foraging in low bushes beneath trees. As I said I am very rusty on small birds of this area. I thought...

    Harrier age and sex, France

Seen quartering a field in Charente Maritime, western France in June this year, an area where Montagu's and Marsh are easily found. Is it possible to age and sex this bird, I'm unsure but I'm sure our resident experts will explain what to look for. Thanks

    Almost white gull, Lincs today

Saw this gull today among a group of Black-headed Gulls. It stood out from the rest for being about 10% smaller, apparently slimmer and almost totally lacking in colour. To me the bill still fits with B-h G but could it be something else? Does leuchism occur in gulls? Any and all thoughts welcome.

Helping farmers to help the birds - news from LIPU - BirdLife in Italy

Many are the species of ground-nesting birds which find themselves nesting on farmland For some this isn’t a problem but for others ploughing or early harvesting can wipe out a whole generation in that area. LIPU, the BirdLife partner in Italy, has run a project in the south of Sicily for three...

Bonelli's Eagle protection – news from LIPU, BirdLife in Italy

Encouraging progress in the protection of eagles breeding in Sicily. In 2011 there were just over twenty pairs of Bonelli’s Eagles nesting in Sicily and the population was plummeting through the wholesale theft of eggs and young for the rich illegal falconry market. The risk was that the bird...

Another Finsch's (??) Wheatear - Mugla Province, Turkey

I didn't want to hijack a recent post regarding wheatears in Turkey but it drove home to me my uncertainty about some forms of wheatear. I catalogued this bird as Finsch's after much reading and searching but I'm still not 100% sure so I'd be grateful for the thoughts of those more experienced...

    Raptors Western France

Looking through some old images I found this one from May 17 shot near the coast to the north of La Rochelle. It's so poor that I've ignored it until now and I'm questioning one bird. Top is a male Monty's, bottom is Black Kite but is the central bird also a BK? Doesn't seem quite right...
