Bird ID - Austin TX area, Feb 2016

Can anyone help ID'ing a small flock of birds I saw while walking around the campus where I work in Austin, TX last week? I did not have binoculars and they would fly away when I got anywhere near so I did not get a great look; they are not birds I normally see so I assume they might be...

$100 small/"travel" binocular recommendations for eyeglass wearers?

sub-$150 small/"travel" binocular recommendations for eyeglass wearers? Any recommendations for lightweight, general purpose (not birding-specific) "travel" binoculars that work for eyeglass wearers in the under $150 range? I was thinking maybe Nikon Prostaff 8x25 ATB?

    Vortex Viper 15-45x65 (non-HD) - opinions?

Hi all, I would appreciate any opinions or advice about the Vortex Viper 15-45x65 (non-HD), available new for $350. Is it a good value, or is it unrealistic to expect long-term satisfaction at that price point? It is $300 less than the "HD" extra-low dispersion glass model, but apparently...

    Help with taxidermy birds

I'm not a lawyer, professor or curator, but I doubt any museum or university (which have the means to legally obtain specimens for study) would be interested in these (which are all very common birds). Honestly, I'd simply trash them.

    Bino diopter setting question?

I wear glasses (which of course equalize the difference in vision between my eyes) while using binoculars, so I keep them set to zero. I don't think variation between my right and left eyes (which is a small difference in prescription) changes much, if it all (and if it did, I suppose it would...

Is this a good deal on Pentax DCF ED 8x43?

Sounds like a good price for the used Pentax bins, but I don't think their warranty is transferable - best to just call them at (800) 877-0155 and check for yourself. I got a pair Swaro 8x30 SLCs at the current closeout price from cameralandny and also like them a lot - I was a little concerned...

    How to attract bluejays

My thoughts, FWIW - Blue Jays are quite a bit bigger than chickadees and finches and the like, are the feeders large enough for them to securely perch on? (I have one smallish hanging feeder, which Blue Jays will occasionally manage to awkwardly hang onto from underneath - but usually they'll...

How practical are the alpha 10X50s for general birding?

I think few birders would consider 10x50's "general purpose" bins, given their size and weight...they might generally have more appeal for stargazers? But to each their own - what matters is what works for you - no harm in trying them.

Long distance focus issue with legend hd 10x

I'm not familiar with the model, but if you're finding it "excruciating" to get them into focus them at any distance (up to and including stars at ~infinity) - which should be more or less effortless - they're obviously unworkable. It seems to me you need to contact the manufacturer to see if...
