    Eastern Spain September

Spent 18 days in Villaricos - on the coast near Vera and Garrucha - in September last year. Local birding was good for a UK visitor- Kentish Plover, Black-winged Stilt, Audouin's Gull, Black Wheatear, Hoopoe etc all reasonably common within a short distance from Villaricos. Also visited Cabo de...

    Red-tailed Black Cockatoos

Taken in Port Douglas, Australia, in December this shot nicely contrasts the different plumage of male and female - most obvious in the tail banding. The male has red patches running down the middle of the tail feathers while the female has more orange/yellow bands which form a striped pattern...

These are the images in Opus; http://www.birdforum.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=108644 http://www.birdforum.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=43539 Helmeted in the first image appears to have more patterned underparts. I have included another image...

Which fish species attracting Streaked Shearwater?

Look forward to your friend's opinion - maybe I should post the thread on an Oz angling site! At the time the Streaked Shearwaters were fantastic to watch as they fed voraciously -I wish I had taken more notice [and photos] of the fish.

Which fish species attracting Streaked Shearwater?

In December off the coast of Northern Territory Australia I observed a large number of Streaked Shearwaters among a lot of fish which often leap high out of the water as in the photos. The fish were probably on average around 18inches long or more so clearly the birds were feeding on the bait...

Having looked at various shots in opus and on other sites following these suggestions, I am convinced Black-hooded oriole is spot on. Thanks to all who replied.

    Gull off Malaga late May

Thanks Lou - good information as usual - really appreciate it. It did look quite different from other young michs present but as you say there is such variabilty. I can see what you mean smiths but I am sure it's the same bird - just looks different in different light as it flew past. Thanks again.

    Gull off Malaga late May

This very worn gull was pictured off Malaga - very pale with a light coloured bill. Reminiscent of 1st winter michahellis but what's with the pale bill?

    Shearwater off Mexican Pacific coast

Thanks Rob - the dark bill tip was a big pointer in my mind too. Saw some nice Buller's on the same day to compare but, as with this bird, plumage variation is massive and the additional factors of light and ship movement make it confusing. The only other major contender was Wedge-tailed but the...

    Shearwater off Mexican Pacific coast

This bird has very worn feathers, almost grey in parts, and initially suggested Buller's but on closer inspection it seems to be Pink-footed. Any thoughts welcome please.

    Chile - Sierra Finch?

Photographed near Punta Arenas Chile in February. There were obvious Grey-hooded Sierra Finches nearby but this bird had a pinky colour on the breast which made it look very different. Any ideas? Thanks, Eric
