    Norwich Birding

The cold spell has resulted in a large number of otherwise unsual sightings around the city. I'll try to collate them into a blog post soon, but for those not on social media: Coues's Arctic Redpoll - still at Whitlingham C.P. with a mixed Lesser/Mealy flock, favouring the area of Alders along...

    Norwich Birding

Thanks Harry. I would have probably been more annoyed if the eagle had flown over the Great Broad as I was away on holiday at the time!

    Norwich Birding

Thanks Sacha, I hope you have a great 2018 too. Yes it will be interesting to see if they continue being seen through 2018 and if breeding is attempted, so if any local birders see Ring-necked Parakeets around Norwich perhaps they could post on this thread so we can keep track of them a bit.

Whitlingham Bird Report 2017 Please find attached to this post my Whitlingham & Thorpe Marsh bird report for 2017. Thanks to those who have posted sightings on this thread or reported them through other means in 2017. Happy birding in 2018! James B (:

    Norwich Birding

Following on from the past two posts, I'm now starting to put together the Whitlingham bird report for 2017 (including Trowse and Thorpe Marsh), so if anyone has any photos, sightings, ringing recoveries or breeding data that they would like included then please let me know. Examples of previous...

I had my first singing Chiffchaffs of the year over the weekend - 2 at Whitlingham (plus a distant 3rd in the direction of Thorpe St Andrew) on Saturday and then one on Lakenham Way this morning.

    Norwich Birding

I'd not seen any Starlings murmurating in the city centre this winter, but last night there was 2000+ over Lakenham about 17:45. They appeared to be heading towards the outer ring road, so perhaps roosting somewhere else.

    Norwich Birding

What is presumably the same Ring-necked Parakeet that was seen in west Norwich last autumn is still around - it was present at the weekend viewed from the Marriott's Way, roughly level on the path with one of the old railway sculptures (if looking at a map roughly west of Wensum Valley Close...

Whitlingham Bird Report 2016 A belated Happy New Year to my fellow Norvicensian birders. I have attached the 2016 Whitlingham Bird Report, thanks as always to those who have reported sightings from the area over the past year. Fingers crossed for some more good birds in 2017! B (:

I don't suppose any on here knows more detail about the Yellow-browed Warbler reported at a churchyard on St Benedict's Street this lunchtime (from BirdGuides)? I've just quickly nipped and had an unsuccessful look on my lunchbreak, but there are four churchyards, so narrowing it down would help.

    Norwich Birding

The past few weeks have seen a good range of birds arriving or passing through the Norwich area. We've had Little Gulls, Common Scoter and today 8 Arctic Terns at Whitlingham. Chiffchaffs, Willow Warblers and Blackcaps are now widespread, there are Sedge Warbers at Thorpe Marsh and today a...

    Norwich Birding

Hi Jane, welcome to BirdForum. If the starlings were your main motivation then I wouldn't recommend coming in May. These murmurations only occur over the winter, when our Starlings are joined by more from the continent. By early spring these birds will depart and the resident birds will split...

    Excellent Bittern-finding skills! :t:

    Norwich Birding

Thanks James. I try to keep a rough document throughout the year, then work on it during the evenings in December. At Whitlingham today the Pintail x Mallard hybrid was back and showing nicely along the slipway. 3 female Goldeneye on the broad, 90ish Siskins (a small flock near the Little Broad...

Whitlingham Bird Report 2015 Here we go, for those who are interested I have attached the Whitlingham Bird Report 2015, based on my records and those of other local birders who have reported sightings throughout the year. Here's hoping for some excellent Norwich birds in 2016. Regards, James

    Norwich Birding

A drake Goosander is still present at Whitlingham, it spent the whole time I was there asleep on a log at the edge of the island on the Great Broad. Across the river at Thorpe there were three Wigeon on the broad (a reminder that the footbridge across to Thorpe is now closed until near the end...

Thanks. I'm keeping a look out on my way into the city too, just in case!

    Norwich Birding

There was one in Surlingham in September, and more recently one seen at UEA in late October, so quite possibly the same individual moving gradually west. I've not seen Ring-necked Parakeet in Norfolk, so I'd be interested to hear if it stays in an easily-vieweable area.

    Norwich Birding

Yesterday at Whitlingham a female-type Mandarin was on the Little Broad at the far end ('scope needed as the vegetation has grown up so you can only easily view from the gate near the watersports centre). Also the Goosander is still in the area, in this case on the river between Whitlingham and...

    Norwich Birding

A couple of Sand Martins flew west over Whitlingham this afternoon following a bit of rain, but other than Chiffchaffs not much in yet.

Decent sighting there, I don't think I've seen any at Thorpe since 2011. Hopefully they'll still be around for the wildfowl counts next weekend.

    Norwich Birding

There are birders with permits, although when I had one I don't remember bumping into any other birders there so I don't know how regular it is visited, or more pertinently whether scarce birds are broadcast given the private nature of the site. At least one birder lives in the area nearby and...

    Norwich Birding

I have seen them settle on a sloping roof of what I assume is an old office block on the east side of St Stephen's Street, although I didn't stay until completely dark so it is possible they moved again.

    Norwich Birding

Two good birding spectacles around the city at the moment - a large Starling murmuration can be seen just before dusk in the Chapelfield/St Stephen's Street area, and in the past few days there have been 300+ Pied wagtails roosting in trees near Norwich train station.
