Re. 8969/8970, ah, I see. Good catch. Re. 9002/9003, Ebird has the two Chaffinches as subs of the same species (Fringilla coelebs), unless it’s been split?

    Was it #9002 & #9003?

    Name a Bird You've Seen 2

From the humble Rock Dove that started this list over two years ago to these latest restricted range rarities, it’s amazing to think this website’s collective membership have spent time with this many different bird species. Very impressive, everyone!

I Googled the bird, then of course, Heard Island – holy smokes, I thought I’d been to some remote places. If you don’t mind me asking, was it a work trip or did you actually go all the way there for that bird?

Great birds! I think you've cheated yourself a hundred in the current tally. The current count should be 8992.

My next (and final) entry has a color and body part: # 8989: Red-knobbed Imperial Pigeon, Ducula rubricera, seen in the Solomon Islands. It’s been a really fun and educational process of cleaning up my life list and contributing to this amazing communal Birdforum effort. I can’t add any further...

"...torch light beam." Brilliant technique! Pretty smart to carry a light with you. Here's another painfully tenuous link to the previous Catbird: # 8986, Steel-blue Flycatcher, Myiagra ferrocyanea, also an island species. Edit: I was too late and missed my chance, let me edit the number...

    Name a Bird You've Seen 2

Here’s my tenuous link to the previous Ground Robin. About a dozen years ago I took the cruddy picture below. I’d hoped by squinting at it hard enough that I could transform it into a Santa Cruz Ground Dove (Solomons and Vanuatu), but no, it’s actually a Mackinlay’s Cuckoo Dove (Solomons...

Stunning picture of the Ground Robin - did you use a flash? The lighting is perfect. I only have three birds left but am having a hard time finding a valid link. I may have something but I have to look for a picture on a different computer...

To get this list within 20 of the amazing 9000 milestone, I’ll offer up my final PNG bird as # 8980: Red-knobbed Fruit-Dove, Ptilinopus insolitus. I had another mannikin but sadly realized it had been previously listed under a different common name. I still have a couple from Vanuatu and the...

I'll match the previous PNG bird with this one seen near Port Moresby: #8978, Grey-headed Mannikin, Lonchura caniceps

#8976, another New Caledonian breeder: Melanesian Cuckoo-Shrike Coracina caledonica. This was my last New Cal bird, but I still have a few from the nearby isles.

Nice picture of a very endangered bird! I’ll add another New Caledonian Species: #8974, New Caledonian Cuckoo Shrike (Coracina analis).

I really need to thank all of the Birdforum members still participating in this list; even the entries that haven’t been able to be counted still provide a great learning opportunity. I mean, European Robins on the Canary Islands – who knew!?! Since yesterday I’ve downloaded three world bird...

Good point, Tiraya - I just did a quick check on-line and saw that the Canary Island Robin split from the European ones a bit over two million years ago but might still be considered a sub-species. Does anyone know? Is #8971 still up for grabs? It's getting tricky this far along!

I use the search system Delia outlined a few posts ago to search this thread. Canary Island Robin wasn't found so, #8971 goes to you! Nice!!

With David and Sarah's amazing Papuan birds, my remaining nine (hopefully), and Bewick's remaining birds, there's a very good chance to get to 9000 - wow!!! Berwick, it looks like the Canary island chiffchaff was used back at #5163.

    Name a Bird You've Seen 2

I'll name-match David and Sara's last entry with #8970, Olive flycatcher, Microeca flavovirescens, also seen in PNG. And thank you for attaching the trip-report, I poring over it now - amazing adventure and well written, thank you for sharing!

    Name a Bird You've Seen 2

That is an amazingly restricted bird! Your trip must have been fascinating. Is there a trip report here on Birdforum (or anyplace)? If another PNG bird is closely enough linked, then Lesser Shining (AKA Dull) Flycatcher, Myiagra hebetior can be #8968.

    Name a Bird You've Seen 2

Tirana, you had a good showing up in the 8900s, very impressive. I came late to the party or I'd have been out a long time ago. David and Sarah, is this a different Island Whistler from the one used for # 8866? In any case, that's a pretty good picture of a flitty target in difficult...

    Name a Bird You've Seen 2

I should acknowledge and thank the previous Birdforum contributors to this thread – I’m only able to edge us a bit closer to that magic 9000 because of their efforts. I was lucky to have had work-related travel to some very remote parts of the world which gives me a few limited-range birds yet...

Yikes! I see the Pied Wagtail made appearances at numbers 186, 189, 453 and 5831. Sorry - I'm just not up on all of the common names. Please allow me to replace #8962 with Cardinal Lory (Pseudeos cardinalis), from the Solomon Islands.

    Name a Bird You've Seen 2

Regarding linkage, I think any bird that gets added from now on belongs to the most exclusive group of all: “The Final Forty.” With almost 9000 species listed, is it possible my next entry hasn’t already been listed under another common name? Back at #6948 was a White-browed Wagtail (Motacilla...

Thank you for including the screen capture, Delia – that search process is so much more efficient than my work-around. And it resulted in me finding a few more birds on my life list that are not yet included here.
