Bolton, are you seriously insinuating I cannot identify a Mistle Thrush from a Fieldfare after 28 years of birding? You cannot be serious pal....I looked at the thrush photo, saw what appeared to be chesnut coloured mantle and a grey rump...hence my ID as a Fieldfare ... bear in mind also that...

in a word...no...the bill is as it should be on a Hobby, primarily because that's what it is (apologies if that sounds a bit 'off', not meant to be)

god this is funny...and people wonder why record commitees have a tough time evaluating reports on occasion! I've tried putting the pic up for a new thread but I must be doing something dodgy because it won't let me

ok Mark, like you say we'll have to disagree Maybe the pic should be posted for another thread, see what others opinions are as it's a bit buried in this thread ..... on 2nd thoughts .......

    your welcome Mark

well, I could say to you that the bird is lightweight as opposed to being a powerfully built Peregrine but then you could argue that you think it's powerfully built .... that's subjectivity for ya ... furthermore, I can see the small white mark above the eye (albeit not very well but I can make...

ok we all agree that Janes bird is a hybrid of some sort .... unless someone would like to claim it's a forest Falconet, which to be honest, wouldn't surprise me

    I'm fairly sure jonny meant coniferous ...... It's a Pupp.............Hobby !

some of these falconers hybrids are odd critters though, some have 25% Gyr, some 50% etc .... we had a local escapee (jessed) around here a couple of years back which in the field appeared as a Pure pale morph Gyr ... it was recaptured and the owner informed us it was 50% Gyr and 50% Peales...

RE: Xeno's pic : it's so obviously a Hobby it's almost painful ... I sometimes think people look 'too hard'

    Sparrowhawk

yeah, had the two centre birds down as Dunlin and the right hand bird as a prob Little Stint .... cant make out the bird on the extreme left ... see what you mean about long bills however in my experience of the blighters (Dunlin) bill length is fairly variable ... alpina birds aside ... sorry I...

    ok, that's me confused ...
  16. London Birder

    Sparrowhawk

got to be inclined to call this a Gyr X Saker ... thats my guess
  17. London Birder

    Sparrowhawk

my first thoughts are either Gyr or Saker on wing V's tail length but the plain looking 'trousers' are throwing me off Saker (although I know this isn't written in stone) as is the possibly too broad moustachial (though not sure if evaluating it's broadness correctly) ... it's a BIG falcon...

funny thing is Xenos pic is actually a half decent pic !!!!! and to think it was rung as a Peregrine!
  21. London Birder

    Sparrowhawk

page 4 has another contentious one...or at least I'm arguing that it's NOT a Peregrine, but a Hobby
  22. London Birder

    Sparrowhawk

surely you're not suggesting it's a Peregrine !! Just so there's no confusion to later posters this is in reference to Xenospizas pic of a putative Peregrine on page four ...

not sure who asked you for the vocals Dieter but don't think it was me ... well done producing these shots ... depicting a Kestrel (probably a female/immature judging by the tail).

    Sparrowhawk

Xeno, frankly, I think it's you who have fallen into 'the trap' and/or been misled, regardless of who the 'top' birdwatcher is or what it's been rung as...it's a Hobby...and it appears to be an (sub) adult at that

Peregrines do occasionally sit in trees for sure , but I think that link is showing a Hobby
