    County Galway Birding (local patch)

I reported my Ring Ouzel sightings to the Ring Ouzel Study Group. I got a reply from Chris Rollie, Area Manager, RSPB. This is his reply: Brendan, Many thanks for your report – although ring ouzels breed in that area, I believe, there is a good chance that so many together at this date are...

Nothing to do with Galway birding but felt I just had to tell somebody about my great good birding luck on my Wainwright Coast to Coast walk over past two weeks. I saw eight Ring Ouzels in one day (yes eight, 5 male and 3 female) on the high level route from Keld to Reeth on top of Swaledale...

I note from BirdGuides that a Great Spotted Cuckoo was seen near Barna on the 9th. Was it a once off or is it still around?

At Lough Inch, Barna this morning: Pair of Common Sandpipers Cuckoo Pair of otters. I've seen the otters frolicking in the past month so presumably they are an item.

Walking near Ballinaboy south of Clifden last Sunday about 2.00 pm, I saw a huge bird being mobbed by two crows. By the time I got the bins out it was some distance away but I was clearly able to see the unmissable pure white on the tail and also a lot of white on the crown of head and nape. I...

On our club outing to Nimmo's Pier on 1/12/12 we were reasonably confident that we saw the Foster's with three Sandwich Terns. Conditions were difficult - low tide, long distance and directly under a low bright sun. Has nobody else noticed a big decline in Greenfinch numbers?

    County Galway Birding (local patch)

Where have all the Greenfinch gone? Greenfinch used to be the most common species at my bird feeders. I haven't seen one in the last 2 weeks. I know there was a serious disease about 2 years ago that particularly affected greenfinch. Has this led to a serious population decline

I had my first sighting of a Grasshopper Warbler this morning near Dangan playing fields. A good and prolonged sighting. I didn't know that the tail vibrates like the clappers when they are singing. Directions: Walk upriver on bank of Corrib to metal stile at end of playing fields. Cross stile...

I was privileged to witness a not often seen spectacle of nature yesterday. Walking by Lough Kip river, two Red Grouse got up about 30m away from me from two different spots about 25m apart. I was very surprised to see that they were two males. They flew across the river and landed in the same...

Can anybody advise where is the best (cheapest) place to buy sunflower hearts in bulk ( up to 20Kg bags). The husks from my sunflower seeds are drawing rats. Failing that: where is the cheapest place in Galway to bulk buy sunflower seeds. I usually buy in Dangan Nurseries but sometimes they...

For those of you able to receive BBC Four, there's a bit of a birding / birdwatching theme this week starting at 9.00pm tonight with three (I think) birding programmes. The much vaunted four part 'Birds Britannia' series starts at 9.00pm on Wednesday with repeats over the week. Other programmes...

The small bird I saw with the Black Swans was not a cygnet. It was black. Having done some research, Black Swan cygnets are light grey brown - almost whitish looking. Sorry for the false alarm. It's a bit early yet for cygnets.

I got a great tick at Inch Levels, Donegal yesterday. A pair of black swans and, much more importantly, with them what looked like a cygnet. I haven’t seen a cygnet reported anywhere for Inch Levels and I know now that breeding pairs are very rare (I think max reported for UK is 11 pairs in...

Just on the off chance that anybody has not yet done so: The petition against illegal bird hunting in Malta can be signed here: http://www.birdlifemalta.org/petition/sign/ It may seem a futile exercise but more signatures may eventually influence the bunch of clowns that run that country. The excellent detective series 'Wallander' (BBC1 9.00pm Sundays) has some birdwatching tonight. I don't know how much or how little. Might be worth a look. In fact, with or without Wallander is always worth a look

I saw a ringed Black Headed Gull at Rusheen Bay, Galway this morning, number 2060. Yellow ring, black numerals on left leg. Metallic ring on right leg. I reported it to birdwatchmayo as it may be one of the Lough Mask birds. Is there anywhere else I should report to?

I saw Simon King do this on telly the other night and it reminded me to post these photos of Olive entertaining some robins to lunch. One of the robins perched on and took food from the palm of her hand last weekend but I wasn't there to photograph it. Hopefully soon. The robins have been...
