176 Spotted Flycatcher (Marianne and Aoife 06.06.09)
Had a very enjoyable trip on the Corrib from Birchall with Brendan. Common Gulls have hatched on the islands, little grey downy balls running around. I had originally though the Common Terns were nesting also, but in fact they are Arctic Terns as the attached photo shows.
Plenty of Greylags also and just sorry I miss that 'nature in the raw scene with the Fox'
I saw Simon King do this on telly the other night and it reminded me to post these photos of Olive entertaining some robins to lunch. One of the robins perched on and took food from the palm of her hand last weekend but I wasn't there to photograph it. Hopefully soon.
The robins have been flying into our utility room (and occasionally our kitchen) for food all summer.
Not a lot about. Not many waders as yet with only a single Bar-tailed Godwit and the usual Oystercatchers and Curlew. 28 Sandwich Terns and assorted Gulls. Also one yellow ringed BH Gull. I got a partial code. Mistook a D on the end for O at range but after some detective work on Eoin Mc Greal's part it turns out the bird was ringed last summer on Lough Mask. Also 2 juvenile BH Gulls present.
177 Wilson's Petrel
John Brittain had one bird with Stormies off Slyne Head yesterday. Bird in active wing moult about 4-5 new inner primaries. Also replacing feather on upperwing coverts. Interesting pattern on base of outer tail feathers.
Photos attached here and in next post.
The only previous Galway record is of one seen near Recess on 31st May 1937. An odd place to say the least for one to show up.
No sign of this one at Murvey. Phots's here http://www.birdsireland.com/pages/rare_bird_news/2009/june_photos.html
Pair of Chough down there which may be the Roundstone pair that failed this year.
It looks like a good spot for BB Sands, AGPs, buntings, etc.
Stone Curlew seen again this morning by Paul Moore, Tom Chadwich et al.
This evening will probably be the best bet. A few of us will be there. Some shots attached taken last night at 21.20hrs (note the last pic isn't a Stone Curlew). Just off phone now with Aonghus who has also had it in flight like the lads this morning. Its a very wary bird and I think we were lucky to get it on the deck at all yesteday.
180 Quail Male singing on Clonfert Callow, 29th June, Neal Warnock.
Was out at Murvey late yesterday, seen the Stone-curlew but very distant. Fired of a few shots when it was in flight but were all the proverbial dot in the sky images.
Out at Birchall on Monday seen the usual suspects and most of the chicks are about to fledge from Birchall Rock. Also 2 Common Sandpipers and a Ringed Plover.
At Rusheen this morning, 15 Greenshank (in mostly summer plumage) 11 Greenshank there Monday. Build up of Redshank over last week or so also. c.40 there today. Also 22 Lapwing, usual Oystercatchers, 15 Sandwich Terns (including 3 juveniles) and 1 Dunlin (adult in summer plumage)
