Has Birding World Folded? (1 Viewer)

Now that's weird, as they'd taken an odd payment a couple of weeks ago, covered two months' subs - I rang them on Tuesday to find out why and was told they were bringing all subs in line for a Feb year-end! No mention of closing down, even when I gave them my new address for future issues.

I guess the time and effort spent pulling these publications together is just not worth what I assume are the rather limited financial rewards. Although I don't have any knowledge of what the limited financial rewards are in this case, I am familiar with them more generally!

cheers, alan

Mine doesn't as far as I'm aware. And it'll be missed. It was so much better than Birdwatch.

Yes, I think BW served its readership of rarity enthusiasts pretty well, with some excellent (and topical) ID pieces, though some issues were a bit thin on content. And it was a bit biased towards the 'yes, you can tick it' side of the argument, unsurprisingly.

The problem with Birdwatch is that it tries to cater for everyone, from beginners to the more advanced. Dictated by economics I suppose. Earlier issues (well before it became part of the Warners group) were aimed more at keener birders.

How old are Millington and Gantlett?

Richard and Steve are occasional contributors to Birdforum. I'm sure they'd be keen to tell you!

I'd like to know what they are doing with their stock of books, assuming they are not continuing with this operation and haven't sold the stock on already..

cheers, alan

I have been in contact with RM today (he helped me in the past with some research I did for my b**k

He said this about the next issue:

......the same editorial will hopefully offer alternatives to a refund that may or may not be attractive to you; hefty book discounts or a cut-price DVD, for example. Or a refund cheque.

I assume that is to subscribers.

Rob

Certainly a shock to hear of the closure. I have all except the first 3 copies of "Twitching" and frequently refer back to I.D. articles and for reminiscing about the great twitches over the years. I still look forward to it dropping through the letterbox even if my patience has been tested at times with gull obsessions(!). Many thanks to all those connected with it's publication.

Even as an ex (ie, non-practising) birder, I'll greatly miss BW – especially the 'Bird News' section. BW bridged a large gap between Birdwatch's 'Bird News' and BB's (very concise) 'Recent reports'.

BW consistently provided the best-structured, indexed and superbly-illustrated (birding porn?!) month-by-month and species-by-species account of rare and scarce birds in Britain and Ireland.

(In comparison, Birdwatch's format of multiple news items, with tabloid-style headlines and columns of dense text, provides an entertaining monthly browse but clearly isn't designed to facilitate its future use as a historical record.)

The WP News section was also very useful. Although DB and Birdwatch also have WP reports sections, BW's nation-by-nation presentation was often more helpful when attempting to trace particular records.

It's interesting that BW's demise coincides with the the December BB in which there is a "BB Eye" editorial on developing the journal in the future. Clearly the digital age is having a major impact on traditional publishing. As the piece says "They [the subscribers] won't need or nurture a doormat".

I suggest as many people as possible read this article and respond to the request for feedback.

"The times they are a'changin'."

...and Limicola also ceased publication recently.

In case of "Limicola" the reason for the demise is simple: To much emphasis on esoteric places like some remote siberian islands and less useful information for the ordinary birder.

For me, the vanishing of BW is sad. But I also see the opportunity to strengthen the remaining magazines British Birds and Dutch Birding. So I will switch to a subscription of British Birds.

Does anyone have the Birdwing World DVD? I'd be interested to know how user-friendly it is, and how it compares to the BB equivalent. Now I'm not paying a BW sub, I'll have a bit of spare cash...

Reason for stopping Birding World

From the german Club300 forum (www.club300.de):

Steve Gantlett:
"We've not gone bust or anything nasty: I've just been doing it every single month for 27 years and I've reached the age of 60.
I plan to travel about birding with Sue in our campervan."

Good for him. I've always thought it was an amazing achievement to have it come through the letterbox under a week after the end of the month with full write-ups of the previous months bird news, up to the minute articles, fantastic photos etc. A thankless task achieved in a very short space of time and no wonder they now want a break. With no '2nd generation' of editors in place, it was bound to come to an end at some point. Hope they both enjoy their retirement!

It is just a collection of pdf files. So it is as user-friendly as your pdf reader - that is, pretty friendly.

I feel it is worth the money although I own the printed issues as well.
