Canon Extenders with 300mm prime lens (1 Viewer)

Hi

I have been digiscoping for some time but would like to try my luck at DSLR. I have my eye on the Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM but am not sure whether to go for the EF Extenders 1.4x II or the 2x II. What do people think about these combinations?

I`ve been looking at the Canon 300mm f4 for some time now from what i`ve read it seems to work well with the 1.4 tc but not quite so well with the 2x tc AF is lost for a start.

The 1.4x should work fine but as to how well the 2x works may depend on your camera model. On anything less than a pro model with the 2x you're likely to lose autofocus unless you tape the pins and even then it maybe slow.

The Kenko pro 1.4x is worth considering as well - a lot cheaper than the Canon and optically just as good.

Just aword of warning on the Kenko pro - I have been using one with the pins taped for a couple of years and it worked very well. However I recently got an f4 lens so I took the tape off, strangely it doesn't work so well on the new f4 IS lens. I've gone over to a Sigma which is working fine and will do me until I can justify getting the Canon.
