Hi! I make these pictures in Istanbul, on Golden Horn in April. I think that it's some kind of hybrid, but I can't guess it's parents.... ))))

Looks like a Rosybill (Netta peposaca) - a South American species, fairly common in captivity in Europe so presumably an escape in Istanbul!

So you're thinking that it is runaway from some zoo? )) But as I see, all Rosybills has some growth on the bill, and this one haven't....

I could imagine that the knob on the bill varies seasonally (i.e., more pronounced during courtship and breeding due to the influence of testosterone and maybe too dihydro-testosterone) and possibly also, with age?

Yes... It can change.... Anyway it should be Rosybill... ))
Thank you!

OP bird is not a pure Rosy-billed pochard but a hybrid. Possibly a cross with Red-crested pochard. Note the brown tinged back and the black undertail coverts.

Agree this is a rosybill x red-crested pochard Hybrid.

This seems to be quite a common hybrid in captivity and as escape (or bred in the wild involvng escaped rosybill?)
