I notice that some birdfeeder companies sell dried cherries or fruit to feed birds. I have used oranges to try to attract orioles but it was only eaten by a red-bellied woodpecker.A mockingbird ate grape jelly I put out. Has anyone had luck using fruits like these or other foods other than seed?

The catbird LOVES those berries. I believe if you wait till closer to fall alot more birds that normally eat insects (bluebirds, robins, etc) will take readily to berries, as that is what they incorporate
into their diet at that time. You should try it out and see who your takers are.

I should also think that very early spring you may get takers, as berries in the wild are an emergency food source for many birds, especially migratory ones.
