Garden/Yard List 2016 (6 Viewers)

After a couple of cloudy/rainy days a beautiful sunny morning and a clear blue sky meant some raptor migration action for me: 35 Honey Buzzard so far for no. 40!

Chris

Chris that's one species I've been hoping to add to my Grdn.Life List., perhaps one year....I always live in hope. :-C

Started my winter ringing at the feeders this weekend - a good haul of both Marsh and Willow Tits amongst the initial stuff (both species increasing very much on my land in the last couple of years), also seven Nuthatches (pleasing as it already exceeds my previous wintering total!). Black Woodpecker et al adjacent.

Also a few nice sightings: four Bewick's Swans flying over (third record), one Wigeon on the pool (second record) and, my favourite, a Hazel Grouse walking quite near my feeders (sixth record, not including tracks in the snow).

115. Bewick's Swan
116. Wigeon
117. Hazel Grouse

Two ticks just in that post!

I suppose I've an outside chance of the third of those at our new place, where today was a big day as I put up feeders for the first time, 5 hours later and I'm still waiting for the first bird (I don't count the Black Redstart zooming about the place as it's more interested in the natural food still abundant in the continuing mild weather)!

Autumn is in full swing here after being away for most of August and September. With more good conditions coming up this week I'll hopefully add a few more....

114 Shag
115 Song Thrush
116 Jay
117 Pink-footed Goose
118 Goldcrest
119 Snipe
120 Ring Ouzel
121 Marsh Harrier
122 Common Crossbill
123 Tree pipit
124 Reed Bunting
125 Grey Wagtail
126 Yellow-browed Warbler
127 Tawny Owl
128 Merlin
129 Brambling
130 Peregrine
131 Short-eared Owl
132 Bearded Tit

I had to double-check my list, as I was surprised I hadn't ticked it already, but no so the Crested Lark on next-door's roof is no. 41.

Chris

Some nice stuff in the last days - male Hen Harrier heading south, a few Bramblings and one Crossbill overhead.

Better, a Blue Tit at my feeders with a ring from Switzerland - adult male, this almost certainly spent a previous winter down there as a first year bird. Will await results back.

PS forgot to add Swift to the list earlier in the year!

(118 Swift).
119. Crossbill

I have seen (and heard) Bullfinches at/on my garden couple of weeks now and I thoght that I allready had it from last winter. Yesterday I checked and it wasn't my this year gardenlist. So...

#65. Bullfinch

Looked out this morning to see a Sparrow on the mixed seed feeder for the first time! 'A bit unusual' I thought, then did a double-take, a lovely little Tree Sparrow for 44, soon joined by two others in the garden!

First frost of the Winter!....wall to wall blue and "zig-zagging-ly" heading North...no.76 Common Snipe...neck and neck now H. ;)

Soon followed by a CB being framed by escorting RNP's, and my 5th Red Kite of the year drifting West....but the best came out of my checklist, when I found that I had omitted A.gentilis! no.77.

Still in with a chance of hitting the "magic" eighty, especially with two "held in abeyance". :eek!:

Noon when a

77: Great-crested Grebe flew past going directly north.

Earlier seven geese - either Bean or White-fronts but too distant to id further than that. So the grebe really made up for that!

Had a Black Woodpecker bounce out of a mist net at my feeders yesterday, that would have been a good one!

Otherwise, main news is big influx of Great Tits to the feeding station ...almost 50 new individuals arrived yesterday. Snow not far behind them, a layer of the white stuff last night.

Saying goodbye to Mrs.H on the doorstep this morning and my attention was drawn to a sycamore alive with birds.
Amongst the Long-tailed Tits, Goldfinches, Goldcrests, Collared Doves, Robins and Blue Tits a

78: Treecreeper

was calling - and shuffling up the trunk.
A long-overdue addition!

Back at yer, Ken!
