600mm non vr lenses - any good ones ? (1 Viewer)

Hi all

Am looking at sourcing and buying a 600mm AF lens (Nikon, not Sigma or 3rd party) and am wondering if anyone has or has had one, any good suggestions as to which ones I should look for, am not at all bothered about having VR on it as I rarely use it on my 300mm F2.8.

Examples of images with one would be nice as well.

Cheers.

I have the AF-S lens, F4, never used the Ai, F5.6.

But, with any lens of this type you need solid support. Unless you are built like a prop, these are heavy lenses, so hand holding is difficult, nay impossible.

I think VR is a luxury, nice to have but not essential.

I have two tripods, an ally and carbon fibre, both are solid pieces of kit, but heavy, the head is a Wimberley, again not the lightest to carry.

I use an electronic remote.

You’ll need a good bag to carry the lens.

So it all adds up

Would I recommend these lenses? Yes I would if you have: -

1. The Money
2. Your photography is many sedentary.
3. You have the patience of Job

If not, then I would treat myself to a F2.8mm 300mm VR.

The new DSlrs make manual focusing easier so you could look at the older Nikon 600/5.6 which is much smaller and lighter than currant 600/4s. Or even the Kowa lens/scope 500/5.6 and/or 850/9.6.
The Nikon V1 will give you 830 mm with your 300/2.8 and if it's AFS with AF.
