DBC indoor meeting

The DBC September indoor meeting is taking place this Thursday (18th) at WWT Washington, start time 7.30pm. The talk is:

"Lake Kerkini - a magical Greek wetland" by Mark Newsome.
It's an overview of birding at this tremendous site, one of the most important wetlands in Europe. Plenty of nice photos, ID tips, travel hints etc

Entry is free, there's a bar there and non DBC members are welcome. As well as the main talk, there'll be the chance to catch up on all the bird news, meet other Durham birders for a chat and hear what's happening with the club and conservation in the county. There will also be a shorter leading presentation by Steve Addinall to help with bird ID and topography. Should be a good night!

You never know, you might even want to join the club and help in conserving and recording the birds of Durham!

Rainton Meadows today.
As scuzz said the weather wasn't ideal and mostly the birds were a long way off but you have to try don't you.

Kingfishers

Got these shots at Low Barnes yesterday morning in the rain. Very few birds about for about three hours before this bird appeared and obligingly hung about, occasionally fishing for about twenty minutes in front of the west hide.

Hetton Boggs today and spent most of the afternoon in the pleasant company of Nellieberta / Joanne. Nice meeting you again and hope the Kingfisher turned up when I left.
Pretty quiet all day with small numbers of the regular Tits etc and 1 willow warbler, 2 fem, reed buntings, also the kingfisher flew in twice on the morning, and both times just flew round the station 3 times and flew of.

It must've known Joanne was calling in ;);).

The hell it did!! Didn't even get the mystery bird which I'm 99.9% sure was a Redpoll!! I'll have a look at the pic later - there'll be soooo much to choose from ;)

I have to admit to being a "photograph anything that moves, breathes or grows" affiliate (and it was photographers I was referring to and not bird watchers).
I just said to CW the other day that a nice muddy causeway between the hide and the island would/could work wonders.
As to the "wind tunnel" I had to keep going outside to warm up ;)

Durham Bird Club Field Trip

Field Trip (by Coach)
on

Sunday 5 October 2008
to

Holy Island & Northumberland Coast
Cost £15 per person

Just a few places remaining on this (normally) productive trip

Back to an autumn favourite with a visit up the Northumberland coast including Holy Island. If the weather conditions are favourable this trip offers the chance to witness spectacular migration with large numbers of thrushes and other passerine migrants including rarities like Yellow-browed Warbler. If conditions are not so good for passerine migrants then there are still likely to be plenty of waders and wildfowl plus some seabirds to be seen on a day out that rarely disappoints.
Book early to avoid disappointment.
Don't miss out

regular movement

no, nothing to do with prunes....

steady passage of birds moving south continues

Honey Buzzards continuing to move through..... surely cant last too much longer...?
Seen at 3 locations in Co.Durham so far 2day, latest being one south at West Rainton at noon.........

Fresh Migrants on Ho'ton patch this am include Woodcock, Ring Ousel, Pied Flycatcher, Crossbill.
Large nos of Meadow Pipits on the move (200/hour) dont know if these are UK bred ?
