I was stumped by this guy. I saw him at Patuxent and the black tail feathers totally threw me. Any ideas?

Hi Terry,

This is clearly one of the Spizella genus, with overall plumage telling you it is either American Tree or Field, and the particularly blank face and monocolor pink bill telling you that it is a Field Sparrow. As you can see on the link to the Garth McElroy photos below, Field Sparrows can have wide variation in the coloration of their wing and tail feathers, number ten also has black tail and greater covert feathers like your bird.

His light-colored beak and face made me think Field Sparrow too (in fact, the full photo on my computer has it labelled Field Sparrow - but it is sitting in my "Unidentified" folder), because I never realized that they had black tails _ I always thought their tails were brown. Thanks!
