Swan plants! (1 Viewer)

Last year here in our part of Northland NZ we had so many Monarch butterfly caterpillars on our swan plants that they stripped them, so this year we bought and planted lots of new ones and though we got lots of caterpillar's again they turn very black with little yellow and die! I don't think that even one has lived. Could it be that these swan plants are toxic for them? And if so will seeds from these plants be ok for next year. Also if its something that the growers are doing what's the point in that!
