During July, when we're in Jasper, Alberta, summer days linger long past suppertime. My SE 8X32, which is brighter than almost every 8X32 roof prism, is outpaced by my Ultravid 7X42 as darkness approaches. In fact, I get at least another hour of useful observation time out of the Ultravid at that latitude. People can argue all they want, but, once your eye adapts, larger exit pupils can make a significant difference.

Hope that helps!

John,

You're absolutely right; large exit pupils do make a difference. I was birding at dusk with my FL's 7x42 yesterday and could spot a male Ferruginous Duck in a group of Tufted Ducks. And not just by the white undertail feathers, but I actually saw the rich chestnut of the bird.

Would like to take a look at the FL 8x32 though.... :)
