We're having an early Spring migration this year in Austin Texas. Early February, and we've seen lots of Cedar Waxwings, and Redwing Blackbirds, as well as Yellow Rumped Warblers, Lesser Goldfinches, and House Finches.

Sheldon: How does this year compare to other years in terms of migration? Are those not wintering species in the Austin area?

For the last couple of years, we usually started noticing all of these migrating Spring birds at the end of February, and by the beginning of April, most of the migrating birds I posted have continued North to their summer habitats, except the House Finch.

However, I have since learned that some of these species winter in Central Texas. The House Finch is apparently a year round resident, and the Cedar Waxwings apparently sometimes winter here, and the Redwing Blackbirds can winter here too. Apparently, even the Yellow Rumped Warbler and the Lesser Goldfinches sometimes winters in Central Texas, but we had not noticed them any of them in the Winter. In the Spring, we see large groups of all of these birds in the Meadow next to the creek near our house.

I would say, we're seeing these birds about 2-3 weeks early this year, due to the mild winter.
