Female purple finches in Northern NJ? (1 Viewer)

A day ahead of the first arrival of two juncos, three "new" little brown birds have appeared on our sunflower seed feeders, sharing them with our usual crowd of house finches and chickadees. They have unfamiliar head and breast patterns. They don't resemble white-throated or song sparrows. Occasionally there is another new face with them, resembling a male purple finch. Are they female purple finches? Northern New Jersey, October 25 & 26, 2016

In the fourth photo the bird on the right is a female/immature House Finch - note the plainer, less contrasting face.
