Canon 400 F4 DO Mark 2 - Reviews? (1 Viewer)

Rob Hutchinson

Has anyone used this lens yet, or seen any online field reviews of it? Looks to be an ideal birding lens and I've been holding off to see how it compares to the new 300 2.8. Any thoughts welcome!

Cheers, Rob

Hi Rob,

I too have been keen to see reviews of this lens. Not least because I own the original version and am wondering if it's worth the cost of upgrading. Reviews have been very slow in coming out due possibly to the fact that most suppliers have them on "back order". It looks like Canon haven't yet ramped up production.

These are the ones I've found so far:

Hi Rob,

Did you ever get your hands on a 400 DO II? If so, how does it compare to the 300 2.8 for rainforest birding? All the reviews I've seen are for birds in open environments. I rented one for a trip to Maine last weekend and it was great, but I'd like to hear about how it performs in very low light conditions before spending $7000...

Best,
Ben

I'm hiring one for back to back tours to Cuba and Panama in 10 days time. I'll post some results when I return in late November. Certainly the images on Juza Photo and his review http://www.juzaphoto.com/recensione.php?l=en&t=canon_400do_f4ii combined with Bryan Canarthan's review http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-400mm-f-4.0-DO-IS-II-USM-Lens.aspx would seem to suggest that this is a superb lens and a definite marked improvement on the original 400 f/4 DO.

Graham Catley http://pewit.blogspot.com is also using one with a 1DX and getting some excellent results, many of which are on his blog. I spoke with him recently at the Eastern Crowned Warbler in North Yorkshire and he seems extremely satisfied with the lens.
