I've been scammed ARGHHHHH (1 Viewer)

New lap top with windows 10 (which I do not like :) ) The browser is "Edge" and I decided to download Firefox as that was the one I used on the old laptop (this one).
I clicked on the "run" button and something came up (not sure what) that made me think.........hang on---that doesn't look right.
Too late.
Next thing it all went pear shaped and I got a message telling me "dont switch off-dont restart" and to phone an 0800 number to speak to the technician.
I realised it was a scam so (as I know virtually nothing about computers) I shut it down and took it to my local specialist who I do know and trust.
They have wiped it and reloaded it..........£50.00 down the pan but good experience :)
I know there are people out there who will say......you could do it yourself etc. but I really couldn't PLUS I need to absolutely know it is clean.
Its not a nice experience.....feels a bit like being burgled.:C

If it was a scam, it's pretty brazen, as they'd need to pay for an 0800 number and it would therefore be traceable, I'd have thought? At least you've got round whatever the problem was, a relief I'm sure.

I am so glad I did not update to Windows 10. I am just reading too much crap about it. Even removed the reminder from my task bar which stopped all the reminders.

Yeah, outlook express is going bye-bye but I don't use it anyway.

how do you get it off the task bar, I,ve tried clicking on the right handside of my Mouse but nothing there, do you click the left handside Instead..?

Hi Coal Tit

I used http://blog.ultimateoutsider.com/2015/08/using-gwx-stopper-to-permanently-remove.html which was recommended in another thread.

That removed the icon from my task bar. There's also an option to keep it on your computer so that it will monitor your system and check for more W10 files being downloaded. You then ask it to clear the cache.

See from post 58 in this thread

It was quite painless once I got the programme to download. Windows Defender wouldn't let it, so I had to disable WD until the download was complete.

It's popped up a warning several times to say that more W10 files have been found, and it's cleared them out for me.

Hope that helps.

I'm not familiar with your screen appearance but if you go to your search programs, and type in "task bar" You can then decide what you want on your task bar and what you don't want. You should get a window that gives you the opportunity to "customize" your task bar. There you can remove whatever icons you want.

hi David, you should only download software from sites that you trust, normally this is the authors website. There are a lot of sites that advertise 'Firefox download' and some are known to include pop-up scams similar to the one you experienced, CNET being a well known problem site.

Firefox is created by Mozilla so go to their site to download their products.

Thanks........when I googled "firefox download" and the official looking emblem came up I stupidly clicked on it without thinking of going direct to the Mozilla site.
No fool like an old one hey :)
