January 1st joint Birdforum list (2023 edition) (1 Viewer)

Not sure about listing rules (as this wouldn't count in eBird/Clements taxonomy), but the Yellow-rumped Warbler I heard today was "Audubon's", likely different from the one listed upthread.
We get a bonus species - we're using IOC so Audubon's Warbler is a different thing to what IOC calls Myrtle Warbler.

We're currently up to date. Global 344, UK 135, Rest of Europe 133, USA 143, East Asia 24. I'll do a combined Europe list later, and I'm toying with the idea of a Near East / Middle East list combining Israel and Turkey just for the sake of it.

More contributions welcome, as long as they were seen or heard before midnight on 1 January local time. No sneaking in something that you saw at dawn on the 2nd!

Also please feel free to point out omissions, duplications and mangling of IOC bird names. We use our own eccentric naming system in the UK so I'm not always reliable with the IOC versions.

Here's the global list for those who don't want to mess about with a Google document.

Why are we doing so badly globally? I understand that's partly my fault, last year we brought much bigger list as we were in Kenya :) But still I think more people in funky places joined last year!

We're currently up to date. Global 344, UK 135, Rest of Europe 133, USA 143, East Asia 24. I'll do a combined Europe list later, and I'm toying with the idea of a Near East / Middle East list combining Israel and Turkey just for the sake of it.

Always fascinating to see how much birds are there in Hong Kong, which we basically imagine to be a city ;)
Yeah, this is a common misconception of Hong Kong. In fact, 40% of the land area is Country Parks (largely secondary forest and shrubland) and we have an internationally important wetland at Mai Po. Birding here is excellent - 100 species in a day is not difficult and the total bird list is well over 500 species, in an area of only 1100 sq km.

I am not sure I will ever go there, but that's really something - 100 species more than the entire Czech Republic.

As well as John's contribution, we've also had a Kittiwake added to the UK and global lists by jacana. I've also fixed some numbering and double-counting issues on various regional lists while doing the combined UK & Europe list which is now on the spreadsheet (in alphabetical order not order of reporting). It's been quite a bad year for people saying that the weather was too bad to leave the house, which we were probably expecting in the US but the UK was a lot quieter than normal too. Plus not getting any contributions from Australia will have set us back a long way, as they can generally get us a few new species just by looking out of the window. The trick with this game is to have people watching their garden feeders in lots of countries.

Global total now 401. Europe 178 (UK 138, rest of Europe 133), USA 145, east Asia 80. Also 40 Israel and 23 Turkey.

I only posted the Turkey highlights and even then Opisska had beat me to some so my total here is pretty small. In reality it’s quite respectable though could have been much higher if I’d put the miles in. Also should have left the Krupers Nuthatch effort, it nearly did for me struggling up steep roads on my crap bike then scrambling up loose rocky hillside, all with a nagging hangover & a few hours sleep.
