Hello to all of you and wishes for a happy new 2014!
I would like to inform you about lake Kerkini of North Greece, one of the best wetlands/ birding places of mainland Greece.
The area has been titled as a national park in 2006 and it belongs to the Ramsar wetlands since 1990.
Inside the national park area more than 300 birds have been recorded. Among them, at least 137 are breeders, 134 are winter visitors and 163 are passage migrants which use the wetland as a stop station for feeding and resting.
Some of the most characteristic and emblematic bird species are the Dalmatian Pelican and Pygmy Cormorant. Other important species include the wintering Finnoscandian population of Lesser White Fronted-Geese, the wintering Greater Spotted Eagles, the breeding Spoonbills, Glossy Ibises, Heron and Egret species (Grey Heron, Great White Egret, Little Egret, Squacco Heron, Night Heron, Little Bittern and recently the Cattle Egret too), Levant Sparrowhawks, Booted Eagles, Short-toed Eagles, Lesser Spotted Eagles and many other species including all the European Woodpecker species (except the Three-toed).
The area is home also to the most large mammals of Europe (Grey Wolf, Golden Jackal, Otter, Badger, Red Fox, Roe Deer, Wildhog, Stone Marten, Red Squirrel, European Wildcat, European Hare, Eastern Hedgehog and Weasel).
There are also a number of reptiles (26), amphibians (11) and many butterfly species (128).
Kerkini is also hosting the larger number of grazing livistock Water Bufallos in Greece. There are about 2800 bufallos out from the total 3200 of Greece. This Bufallo is recognized as a dinstict Greek race.
I 've attached you a long series of photos too, resembling some of the species, habitats and landscapes of the area.
I hope you 'll like them.
For people who are interested for more information about the area, or maybe other places of North Greece please contact me for more help.
I also work as a guide so for guidance or other services i can also help you.
Regards,
George
