Leicestershire and Rutland Birding/Local Patches (1 Viewer)

Thanks Dave
Sorry it didn't give you a fighting chance. Even a TS in November would be a good bird but this could have been the one that got away!
By the way, hope the scumbags who ruined your week bump in to PC plod sometime soon.

Finding a Temmink's Stint at Swithland Reservoir this morning rounded off a good local week with some surprising new arrivals for the time of year

  • Great White Egret at Frisby and Priory Water
    Long-tailed Duck at Rutland Water
Grey Phalarope also at Rutland Water

The Temminck's could well be the unID bird that Dave had at Cossington last month. And if so it could well stay around a while longer yet.

Steve

The Temminck's is still at Swithland but very easy to miss - as I have done on two visits this week. When it is seen it is always on the bit of shore between the piled up stones and the rocky promontory, often near a narrow log on the shore.

It would be a good New Year's day bird.....

Steve

poss adult Baltic Gull

Possible ad Baltic Gull seen at Albert Village tip yesterday teatime (so likely to be seen on the lake if still present). Bird information.

Had 6 Common Scoters (4 males and 2 females) this afternoon at Swithland Res (North Section) and the summer plumaged Black-necked Grebe.

Cheers,
Dave.

I will be visiting Rutland Water Reserve on the 7th July just for the day and would love someone to give me a list of ALL species found around Rutland Water including the regular all year round species like Blackbirds, Starlings ect, ect

You can e-mail me a list at [email protected]

I have been on the site but I have found no complete list of species seen at the reserve just updates and waterfowl so any help would be extremely gratefully received

Kind Regards

BCB

It may be of interest to some of you that I've created a list of the birds seen in what I consider to be south-west leicestershire. The border of the area can be seen on the map included with the list. Considering the fact that most of the sites are quite small and that there are only a few areas of water and most of them are either very deep or just sandpits, I think it is a pretty good list. There is a link below to page where the list can viewed and also one to my blog -enjoy.

EDIT - This is a more upto date list I have found taken from the list on the Rutland Water Reserve web site and sorry about the confusion before as I think I uploaded the wrong species list as I had not deleted the 4 location tables I mixed together so I uploaded that one instead.

Here is a link to the web site and page I required this information from -

There are a number of anomalies in that Rutland Water list, Adrian.

Australian Shelduck and Emperor Goose, for instance won't get onto any 'proper' list and there are a lot of duplications boosting the total because of alternative names for the same species - Little Plover/Little-ringed Plover; Avocet/Pied Avocet; Leaches Petrel/Leach's Storm Petrel; Turnstone/Ruddy Turnstone; etc., etc.

It takes quite a while and a lot of research to compile an accurate and full list (Carl's SW Leics list mentioned in Post # 349 for instance has taken quite a time to organise - and even longer to amass ;))

@Adey Baker

Many thanks for pointing out the error I had uploaded the wrong table have now uploaded the correct one I hope

Kind Regards

That's more like it!

You may wish to change 'Latin' name to 'Scientific' name if you want to be strictly accurate (a lot of the names are derived from Greek as well as Latin)

I am quite surprised that there are not many more responses to this thread as I thought Rutland was one of the top Birding reserves or is it a case that it is reported on other forums so people think better of putting there accounts and sightings on here.

I will be visiting this Sat (29th) after a few abborted days so will put a full report and review of the reserve here for all to read and hopefully reply to

Kind Regards

Adrian

rutland is the top birding place in the midlands - no doubt about that

ive noticed most of the better bird sites have littel coverage on birdforum

I wonder why this is you would think reserves like Rutland and other top reserves would like the coverage and other people on here would like to know what they are watching where and when.

There are so many alternative repositories for information that folks are probably unlikely to cross post.

For RW the LROS site often has a daily summary http://www.lros.org.uk/News.htm
Tim 'tweets' live from the field. tim appleton@Rutlandbirds
If there is anything special Andy will 'tweet' stuff too Andy Mackay@lrosbirdnews

Twitter is not as mysterious as folks often think, it's easy to get set up and then to get tweets from a specific account texted to you mobile, even if you don't have a smart phone.

Gannet EBR

LROS web site has Juv Gannet EBR 'awaiting further details'. anyone on here know anything? A few county low listers like me need the big bird!
Thanks

Just for completeness and rather self consciously following up my own question, ... all that's known is the juv Gannet flew through being mobbed by gulls and headed off towards Uppingham probably over flying the Falcon Hotel which does a very nice lunch and a decent pint:)
