Lynx-BirdLife Taxonomic Checklist (7 Viewers)

Quailfinch

African Quailfinch Ortygospiza atricollis

Yes, just the one of them - I would have thought some forms could have garnered 7 points? And why not just Quailfinch? cf Redpoll.

cheers, alan

Crimson Finch

Black-bellied Crimson Finch Neochmia phaeton
White-bellied Crimson Finch Neochmia evangelinae

split

cheers, a

Zebra Finch

Timor Zebra Finch Taeniopygia guttata
Australian Zebra Finch Taeniopygia castanotis

two species, in accordance with some checklists (at least formerly)

cheers, alan

Socotra Sparrow

Socotra Sparrow Passer insularis
Abd al Kuri Sparrow Passer hemileucus

not new, but assume it scores 7 points

cheers, a

Northern Wheatear

Northern Wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe
Black-throated Wheatear Oenanthe seebohmi

No surprise perhaps

cheers, a

How utterly daft... it's been called Seebohm's Wheatear forever. Thank goodness it's the only wheatear in the region with a black throat. Oh, wait...

very good point! Agree entirely - major reluctance to use names of (non?) collectors?

cheers, alan

Yellow Wagtails

Western Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava
African Pied Wagtail Motacilla aguimp
Grey Wagtail Motacilla cinerea
Citrine Wagtail Motacilla citreola
Eastern Yellow Wagtail Motacilla tschutschensis

Not sure about the order! Implications for British List if BLI / Lynx taxonomy adopted by BOU.

cheers, a

Some of the lumps won't be popular... e.g. Yemen Accentor, Timor Bush-warbler, Sri Lanka Scaly Thrush... Nigel really doesn't like splitting Zoothera dauma!

great gray shrike complex

Loggerhead Shrike Lanius ludovicianus
Chinese Grey Shrike Lanius sphenocercus
Giant Grey Shrike Lanius giganteus
Northern Grey Shrike Lanius borealis
Great Grey Shrike Lanius excubitor
Southern Grey Shrike Lanius meridionalis

Based on range, pallidirostris now part of L. excubitor, so many N Europe countries loose a species under this taxonomy.

red-backed shrike complex

Red-backed Shrike Lanius collurio
Red-tailed Shrike Lanius phoenicuroides
Isabelline Shrike Lanius isabellinus

L. phoenicuroides now recognised by all the global taxonomies? (In contrast, in W Europe, still a Dutch-only split, I think...)

Rosefinches

Red-mantled Rosefinch Carpodacus rhodochlamys (ie no Blyth's)
Pink-rumped Rosefinch Carpodacus waltoni
Beautiful Rosefinch Carpodacus pulcherrimus (ie not two species)
Dark-rumped Rosefinch Carpodacus edwardsii
Pink-browed Rosefinch Carpodacus rodochroa
Sharpe's Rosefinch Carpodacus verreauxii
Spot-winged Rosefinch Carpodacus rodopeplus
Vinaceous Rosefinch Carpodacus vinaceus
Taiwan Rosefinch Carpodacus formosanus
Sinai Rosefinch Carpodacus synoicus
Pale Rosefinch Carpodacus stoliczkae
Tibetan Rosefinch Carpodacus roborowskii
Sillem's Rosefinch Carpodacus sillemi
Streaked Rosefinch Carpodacus rubicilloides
Great Rosefinch Carpodacus rubicilla
Long-tailed Rosefinch Carpodacus sibiricus
Red-fronted Rosefinch Carpodacus puniceus
Crimson-browed Finch Carpodacus subhimachalus
Pallas's Rosefinch Carpodacus roseus
Three-banded Rosefinch Carpodacus trifasciatus
Himalayan White-browed Rosefinch Carpodacus thura
Chinese White-browed Rosefinch Carpodacus dubius

Fairly well aligned but for the 'lump' of Beautiful Rosefinch and similarly Blyth's back into Red-mantled, so quite conservative perhaps.

cheers, a

Brown Bullfinch

Brown Bullfinch Pyrrhula nipalensis
Malay Bullfinch Pyrrhula waterstradti

Is this unique amongst checklists? A difficult bird these days.

cheers, alan

Mountain Serin

Mountain Serin Chrysocorythus estherae
Mindanao Serin Chrysocorythus mindanensis

not unsurprising, perhaps, interesting that the Sulawesi / Javan split is not here, although is the Sulawesi bird even described?

cheers, alan

Goldfinches

European Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis
Eastern Goldfinch Carduelis caniceps

are these just the grey-headed birds?

cheers, a

Maghreb and Asir Magpies - the latter Saudi Arabia's only endemic?
Two splits from Eurasian Jay in the Oriental region
Two splits from Spotted Nutcracker - quite surprised the Taiwanese and SE Chinese forms didn't make the grade.

Black-faced Bunting

Black-faced Bunting Emberiza spodocephala
Masked Bunting Emberiza personata

Is personata a possible vagrant further west?

cheers, a
