A single distant shot was all I got of this bird today which, at first, I thought was a Meadow Pipit. Looking at it now though I'm not so sure, the markings and the darker edges of the wings don't seem right. Any thoughts please?

With an unfamiliar bird, always look first at its bill (in this case, quite unlike a pipit's). Linnet, as stated.
