The plains of Castro Verde and the hills of Mértola offer some of the best birdwatching opportunities in Portugal, with steppe birds, large raptors, waterbirds, passerines and even nocturnal birds. There are many exciting species, including Spanish Imperial Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, Great Bustard, Crane, Gull-billed Tern, Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Roller, Red-necked Nightjar, White-rumped Swift, Calandra Lark, Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, Golden Oriole, and Rock Bunting. However this vast region is not easy to explore and if you don’t know where to go, it is easy to miss the most interesting birds.
My latest book “Birding hotspots in the Alentejo: Castro Verde and Mértola” will make it easier for birders to get the best from this wonderful region. It contains a description of 27 interesting hotspots, with GPS coordinates and detailed maps.
