New visitor- Phoenix, AZ (1 Viewer)

we can't see if there is and red under the tail but it's not quiite a Northern Flicker in my staring at it.

What makes it a northern flicker over a gilded flicker?
Good point. Relatively-broad barring on upperparts suggests northern flicker. Apparently yellowy area along primary-shaft suggests gilded flicker. Crown/hindneck are rather equivocal. Pass.

Cap is golden, throat spot is large and messy-bordered, breast background is silver-gray, not brownish; wings are not as completely dark as for Northern. Gilded for me.
