I'm reduced to garden birding this weekend

It's only garden birding this weekend, roads too bad to be bothered heading out.

The arctic weather has thrown up an interesting surprise, a flock of Brambling in my garden. There about 8 -10 birds flying with Chaffinches. They come readily to the feeders but seem to prefer ground feeding. Here are a few photos and one of a male blackcap too.

Happy Christmas,

Richard

Went down to Kinnego hide nothing of note. Still frozen round the edges of the reeds. 2 swans in the distance. Usual tits, finches etc. 2 Jays on the walk back to the car and a Buzzard that failed to spot me and landed about 20ft away. Got good view until I reached for the camera then the movement spooked it. Otherwise pretty drab so roll on spring.

Another fruitless visit to the hides at Kinnego still some of the Lough edges frozen so anything worth seeing is farther out.
Took a walk through 1 of the paths got a few photos.

Heading to Castlewellan on Friday. Day out with the wife. She can shop but I hope to look for Red Kites. Anyone able to point me in the right direction ?. How difficult is it to get close enough for a decent photograph ? Is it pot luck or have I a decent chance of seeing 1.

Thanks in advance,

John.
