welcome to birdforum, these are Dalmatian Pelicans (Pelecanus crispus).

...Apart from any consideration of range it's because we can't see extensive black in the wings (which great white pelican would have)

Thank you for your answers.
During my visit to the site, there was a group of White Pelicans (P. onocrotalus) resting on a sandbar in the Strymon River, then in flight, well observed and photographed.
I had barely looked at the (poor) photo attached to this post of another group of Pelicans passing in flight a little later...
When I found it today, I had a big doubt... Correct ID 30 years later!
