I found a unusual petrel that unfortunately was no longer among the living.im used to seeing wilsons storm petrels on occasion, but this bird left me clueless on its identity.i searched ebird reports for past petrels that occasionally show up on the south shore of long island and none resemble this bird.it was banded also I believe in Australia in 2021.no white rump patch, dark blue with black tip on short tail and black wing bars.underside looked white but the bird probably would have looked alot cleaner if it wasn't dead.

Hello Glide 133,

After the holiday weekend, I would call the New York Audubon Society for help with the bands.

Stay safe,
Arthur Pinewood

the location through me off.i would not expect that there.lot's of shearwaters have been dying off in NYS.there were a few dead great shearwaters along that area.
The other thing to check is the legs - all petrels have longer legs & have webbed feet - I can't think of any with bright red legs either

My understanding is that pigeon racers are not interested in details of any bird that fails to return to the loft.
