Hi,

I'm just really looking for confirmation with this. Saw this in July 06 and had it down as something else, however looking at it now i think its a Powerful woodpecker (which we had seen and heard much better earlier in the trip).
This bird however called quite differently. Presumebly its just another call but could you check for me.

Probably best to watch the video but heres a couple of stills as well.

Cheers

Dave

Crimson-crested?

This is what i originally had it down as, and pale bill and black up the forehead would suggest this but it shudnt really have a black eyestripe and pale belly (according to Birds of Peru, tho this book is known for being dodgy at times).

I think looking at it yet again maybe your right and i was right in the first place.

Hi Dave,
Confirm adult female nominate race Campephilus melanoleucos (in Peru it should have a pale, striped belly). Actually if you don't use the Clement & Shany this is a classic example of it.

looks Crimson-crested to me too Dave

black forehead, and very broad malar along with the wide mantle lines preclude anything else

you could check with Dave E.

I'd love to know if you have a video of the Powerful Woodpecker that you saw much better than this Crimson-crested! Can't help thinking that the Ivory-bill searchers would kill for something a hundredth as good as the "poor" one.
