Redpoll undertail coverts (1 Viewer)

I'm seldom confident of the id of redpolls in a photograph. Seeing them from a variety of angles helps considerably and even then I still sometimes can't decide. I'm assuming these were not in possesion of other obvious Mealy features or Adey would have commented..

For what its worth.. ageing and sexing them first helps!

As Jane has hinted at none of these birds showed any 'typical' mealy features - there was no hint of a white rump, for instance.

The bottom left does show a bit of the buffy suffusion but the shots were actually taken on a very foggy day so I might have lost a bit of the subtle colouring whilst using the 'contrast' controls in Photoshop to get rid of the foggy 'haze.'

Having said that, I must say that there has only been a few birds present for a few weeks so there must have been an influx from somewhere to boost the numbers up to the 22 that were present on this particular date.
