Native tribes, exotic diseases, science in the rainforest, and large, flightless birds that can kill you - this book has a little bit of everything. The author ran a study of cassowary dung ("pekpek") for years in the Papua New Guinea rainforest. He ended up founding a research center in the middle of the jungle and learning how to conduct conservation there (which went against how "big conservation" worked).

This is an interesting read that gives insight into the realities of both biological field work and conservation. It's a must-read for anyone planning a career in either field, and recommended to anyone else curious about them.
