Came into my backyard and eventually snagged one of the finches that frequent here...

Skinny legs, smallish beak, squarish tail all suggest Sharpie.
Here in NYC, both the Sharpies and the resident Coopers use the Central Park feeder site at Evodia Fields as their preferred 'fast food' location.
 
Yup, a Sharpie. Check the streaking on the chest for one.

So they do exist in California. I've seen 8 Cooper's and no sharpies so far.
