South India in August/September (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

I will be in South India on holiday with my non-birding girlfriend for around a month from 15th August. Besides flying in and out of Mumbai we have a very fluid itinerary!

I know that monsoon is going to make birding a little difficult and that most of the top birding sites in South India (Various spots in Goa, Thattekad, Ooty etc.) seem to be almost exclusively visited during winter - but I'd love to shoehorn in some birding if possible.

Could anybody advise on how easy it will be to bird some of these sites or point me in the right direction for any information?

Any suggestions for other potential sites would also be much appreciated - we aim to travel down from Mumbai to Kerala and possibly make the trip across to Chennai if possible.

Thanks in advance!

Louis

Hi Louis,

As you know the 'best' of birding season starts from October, after the monsoon rains. Nevertheless there are always plenty of bird to see in Aug/Sept.

There is a very active Facebook group 'Birdwatchers of Kerala'. Please do post your query there as well, and I am sure that you will get a very good idea about specific birding spots all across Kerala suitable for your time of visit.

You should be able to do a decent amount of birding during the time.. The migrants will start arriving by then! Let me know if you want to know anything else...
